Kitchen Porter is an entry-level position that is part of the Rise Academy team. Adequate nutrition may be an obstacle for some students;

the Kitchen Porter supports Academy students by serving nutritious meals that fuel students’ learning. The Kitchen Porter reports to the Nutrition Coordinator and Director of Operations and supervises no staff.

Essential Duties

• Washing dishes, equipment and utensils : ensure that equipment and dishes are cleaned, sanitized and ready to prepare and serve food.
• Sanitizing kitchen surfaces : Sanitize counters, stovetops and other places where food is prepared to meet health regulations.
• Inventory support : Help Nutrition Coordinator manage inventory by organizing food storage and reporting when items are needed
• Receiving deliveries : Receive and unpack all deliveries, ensuring all food and supplies are correctly placed.
• General cleaning : Sweep and mop the floors, wipe out trash cans, change garbage liners and clean and organize food storage.
• Equipment maintenance : Porter ensures that ovens, refrigerators, mixers and other cooking equipment are in working order, informing the Nutrtition Coordinator and Director of Operations when there’s an issue.
• Basic food preparation : Help prepare meals by washing, peeling and cutting ingredients.
• Setting up tables and chairs as needed
• Must be able to lift up to 30lbs
• All other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
• Ability to read and follow instructions
• Ability to adhere to set shifts and work schedule
• Faith in Jesus Christ, affirming the Apostles’ Creed as lived out in a faith community

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience serving food, especially in a school setting
• Experience working around youth
• First Aid and CPR Certified
• ServSafe Certified

Position Overview & Compensation

• Part-time hourly Non-exempt (eligible for overtime)
• $12 - $15 per hour 10 hours per week
• Schedule
• School Year : usually mid-August to mid-June
• Work hours of Monday through Thursday 11 : 45am- 1 : 45pm and Friday 11 : 00am to 1 : 00pm

• VA State Police Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
• VA Department of Social Services Child Registry Search (Abuse / Neglect of children)
• Frequent standing and use of hands and arms
• Must be able to lift up to 30lbs
• Frequent bending and twisting from the waist
• Mask-wearing when required
