Job Description
BASIC FUNCTIONS :
The purpose of this role is to provide transportation to treatment services for patients with substance use disorder (SUD) at discharge from hospital-based peer programs in the District of Columbia.
The driver will collaborate with peer recovery coaches and outreach coaches to transport patients safely and efficiently to their treatment provider and / or to their recovery support services provider.
This position requires knowledge of substance use disorders and methods to support the SUD population.
This job requires a flexible schedule, as hospital discharge volume varies throughout the day. This role will require driving to hospitals across the District, as transports will be needed at seven District hospitals in various wards.
This role requires frequent phone calls with peer coaches and outreach coaches to understand when and where to pick up patients.
Patients being transported to treatment and recovery services are those at risk for or experiencing substance use disorders, and this role will therefore require a particular understanding of behaviors and challenges common in this patient population to support their decision to enter treatment or utilize recovery support services.
Note, this role will not be responsible for providing medical advice to patients.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES :
Communicate effectively with peer recovery coaches and outreach coaches to identify pick-up times and locations.
Pick up patients from the hospital or community location and safely transport them to a treatment provider or to a recovery support service provider.
Ensure the patient arrives at treatment and enters the facility.
Upon arrival, must accurately record when and where the patient was transported.
Possess a friendly and courteous disposition when transporting patients.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS :
Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to patients and peer recovery coaches. The candidate must possess excellent driving and communication skills.
The incumbent must be able to read and write routine reports. The candidate must also demonstrate :
o Knowledge of treatment and recovery support service locations
o Ability to bridge needs and identify resources for patients, if needed
o Understanding of ethics and confidentiality issues
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
Previous driving experience required.
Must own a vehicle with current registration and passing inspection and emissions as required by state, have a valid Drivers License, and have an excellent driving record.
Monday - Friday, with occasional weekend with limited hours.
Physical Demands : The position requires moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping and standing for periods of time.
