Summary
Under general supervision, plans and implements a therapeutic program for the psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
Plans and provides age and developmentally appropriate experiences to ensure cognitive and emotional growth. Adds to the quality of patient care through observation, documentation and communication with other members of the health care team.
Teaches, supervises and evaluates the work of volunteers and student interns. Serves as a resource on child development issues.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education : Knowledge of current theory and practice in child development and teaching skills at a level normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Child Life or related field and, in addition, requires completion of a Child Life Internship Program.

- Work requires the ability to evaluate patients' social, emotional and developmental needs to plan therapeutic, educational and recreational programs.
In addition, it requires knowledge of medical terminology and its implications and the ability to prepare required documentation at a level generally acquired through nine to twelve months of on-the-job training.
- Analytical skills are necessary in order to design therapeutic activities to meet desired objectives, observe and note significant patient behaviors.
- Advanced interpersonal skills are required to interact with patients and families.
- The ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to eighty percent of work time when observing and instructing patients, and recording notes and observations.
- The ability to operate a variety of audiovisual equipment.
