MIAMI DIRECTOR

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Director to focus on major and leadership gifts fundraising in the Miami area and throughout Florida.

This full-time position will be based in Miami and report to the Managing Director, Development and Outreach Department based in New York.

The Miami Director will oversee the Miami Committee, a volunteer committee of supporters, to expand and deepen our support in the area.

The successful candidate will be expected to work from the Miami office at least 2-3 days per week. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities :

  • 1. Build financial support for the organization by designing and managing a Florida-based development and outreach strategy, with a specific focus on Miami;
  • Work with the Managing Director to build philanthropic networks and support throughout Florida;
  • 2. Develop sustainable financial support for the organization by identifying, cultivating and soliciting major and principal gift donors (USD $5,000- $100,000+) from across Florida, and develop and lead a robust principal gift strategy to build HRW' s pipeline of leading supporters in the state;
  • 3. In collaboration with the volunteer Miami Executive Committee and Miami Committee Co- Chairs, oversee and lead fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Miami, including the annual Voices for Justice gala celebration;
  • 4. Collaborate closely with the volunteer Miami Committee to expand support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting philanthropic commitments from current supporters and prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations, with a focus on major and leadership donors;
  • 5. Manage the Miami Committee, directing the group's efforts in line with fundraising, outreach, and cultivation initiatives;
  • develop a diverse, equitable and inclusive committee and keep the members engaged through regular meetings and communication;
  • 6. Represent HRW, present the organization's work, and foster partnerships with to existing and prospective supporters, local community organizations, policy makers, and media outlets;
  • 7. Collaborate with colleagues across the Division to manage relationships with HRW Board members and Committee members who are part-time residents of Miami;
  • When needed, report on Miami's development progress to members of the HRW leadership, Board of Directors and Board sub-Committees;
  • 8. Oversee gift processing, data management and donor support services for Florida with the Miami Development Manager;
  • 9. Oversee income tracking and projections, expenditure budgets, event expenses and revenue, and regularly monitor the Miami development budget to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;

10. Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department; and

11. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.

Managerial Responsibilities :

  • 1. Lead, motivate, and mentor direct-reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well- being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care;
  • 2. Promote inclusive and positive work environment including by soliciting diverse points of views, encouraging staff to participate in DE&I efforts, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc;
  • 3. Model inclusive behavior and consistently adhere to HRW's internal values;
  • 4. Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into the division's work;

5. Work with staff to develop initiatives aimed at movement-building and expanding our partnership with diverse clients / donors / stakeholders and partners; and

6. As Office Leader, provide robust office leadership that contributes to operational effectiveness and an equitable, resilient, and collaborative culture.

The Office Leader will also have some administrative and human resources duties to maintain office morale and to ensure that staff are aware of and adhere to office security processes.

Qualifications :

Education : A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.

Experience : A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience is required. A minimum of five years of management experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge :

1. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and / or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is required.

2. A proven track record in creating and stewarding major gifts programs and extensive experience managing high-level donor relationships are required.

3. Demonstrated experience managing a small team is required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteer committee members and external partners are required.

Track record of effective team-work is required.

5. Demonstrated experience overseeing production of large events, such as annual fundraising dinners and smaller bespoke events;

including budget, revenue tracking and projections is required.

6. Sound knowledge of the Miami philanthropic community is preferred.

7. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required; proficiency in Spanish is desired.

8. Technology skills, including experience with Salesforce or relational databases and online conference platforms (Zoom and Microsoft Teams) is an asset.

9. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable.

10. Ability to travel locally, within Florida, and internationally is required.

Salary and Benefits : HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits. HRW offers a relocation assistance package and will assist employees in obtaining necessary work authorization, if required;

citizens of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. This position is based in the United States and the salary range would be USD 121,000 - 133,000.

Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
