JOB DESCRIPTION

This program is open to Transitioning Service Members Only As Part of the DOD SkillBridge Program.

The DOD SkillBridge program gives service members the chance to gain valuable civilian work experience. It offers specific industry training, apprenticeships or internships during the last 180 days of military service.

The program connects service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences.

The City of Atlanta- Department of City Planning is now offering SkillBridge opportunities to service members interested in the following career opportunities :

Building Inspector Sr or Electrical Inspector Sr.

You'll be provided an opportunity through SkillBridge to "earn as you learn" and gain real world experience working alongside industry professionals.

After you transition from service you may have the option to be hired into a permanent full-time position with the City of Atlanta.

Ideal candidates will be active duty with at least 180 days remaining, approved for participation from your command, possess a HS diploma or GED, and be authorized to work in the US.

You may be eligible to participate in SkillBridge if you :

  • Have 180 days of service or fewer remaining prior to your date of discharge and you have at least 180 continuous days of active service.
  • Obtain approval from your unit commander.
  • Agree that participation in SkillBridge can be terminated at any time by the service if mission requirements dictate.

Starting salary - $26.00 per hour, after obtaining an ICC certification, salary will be $27.30 per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General Description and Classification Standards

Performs inspections of commercial structures and residential, single-family detached structures for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

Supervision Received

Works under very general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following :

Inspects the quality of electrical work in the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings, and other structures.

Checks electrical installation, including fixtures and appliances; examines the grade, treatment, and quality of materials and regulations regarding electrical code compliance and life safety.

Completes inspections, writes up reports on each individual job, and as required creates photographic documentation.

Reviews permits and plans and examines all construction documents.

Plans and implements daily inspections schedule; Operates and maintains city vehicle.

Evaluates the quality of materials and work relative to applicable electrical codes, ordinances, regulations, and relative to approved plans;

issue notices to identify corrections required for compliance or to stop work on projects.

Responds to verbal and written inquiries from architects, contractors, builders, City personnel, and the general public; interprets, applies, and explains requirements and restrictions related to electrical codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures;

develops alternative methods for compliance with requirements and restrictions.

May assist with scheduling appointments and reviewing and approving plans in compliance with applicable electrical codes and ordinances.

Decision Making

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Applies organizational policies. May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.

Thorough knowledge of :

  • State and national electrical codes and related laws and regulations; standard practices, processes, tools, equipment and materials of the electrical trade;
  • electrical inspection techniques and practices; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; basic investigative techniques and methods;

safety standards and methods of building construction for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Read, interpret, apply, and explain electrical building plans, blueprints, specifications, and building codes; make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately;

use word processing and other related computer software programs; prepare and maintain complete, accurate, and concise reports and records.

  • Ability to : learn electrical or energy codes and ordinances adopted and enforced by the City; interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations;
  • read and interpret complex building plans, specifications and building codes; determine whether construction systems conform to City code requirements;
  • apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials; detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices;

advise on standard construction methods and requirements for residential, commercial and industrial

Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; exercise initiative making recommendations to management; communicate effectively with individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds;

establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and organize and prioritize work.

Proficiency in safely operating office equipment including computers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED. Five years of work experience as an electrical contractor or journeyman electrician (in residential, commercial, industrial and low voltage) is required (or equivalent combination of experience and training).

Preferred Education & Experience

Associates degree or vocational training in topics such as electrical wiring, architectural drawing, electricity, building codes and carpentry;

continuing education is desirable. Ten years of related work experience is preferred (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).

Licensures and Certifications

Position would be expected to have licensure or professional certifications appropriate to the position.

Required : Valid Georgia driver's license

Required : Must have a Residential Electrical Inspector certification from the ICC or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).

Preferred : State of Georgia Electrical Contractor License
