Job Summary : The Heavy Civil General Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating all on-site activities for heavy civil construction projects.
This role requires a strong understanding of construction processes, materials, and equipment commonly used in heavy civil work, including earthwork, concrete, underground utilities, and structural work.
The General Foreman will work closely with the project superintendent to ensure that project objectives related to safety, schedule, quality, and budget are met.
Key Responsibilities :
- Field Leadership : Lead, supervise, and mentor field crews, including laborers, equipment operators, and subcontractors, ensuring that work is executed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans and specifications.
- Project Planning & Scheduling : Collaborate with the project superintendent to develop and implement project schedules and work plans.
Monitor daily production, adjust resources as needed, and report progress to the project management team.
Safety Management : Enforce strict adherence to all safety policies and procedures on the job site. Conduct daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and inspections to ensure a safe working environment.
Address and resolve safety issues promptly.
- Equipment & Material Coordination : Oversee the proper use and maintenance of heavy equipment, tools, and materials. Ensure that equipment is operated safely and that work areas are properly set up and maintained.
- Quality Control : Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality control procedures.
Identify and address any deficiencies in workmanship or materials.
- Resource Allocation : Manage labor, materials, and equipment effectively to meet project schedules and budgets. Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure proper sequencing of work and resolve any conflicts that may arise.
- Problem Solving : Quickly address and resolve on-site issues that could affect the project’s timeline, budget, or safety.
Report major challenges to the superintendent and project management team.
- Documentation & Reporting : Maintain accurate daily logs, production reports, and timesheets for all field personnel. Submit daily reports on project progress, including any changes or incidents that may have occurred.
- Collaboration : Work closely with the project superintendent, project managers, engineers, and inspectors to ensure that all phases of the project are completed as planned.
Communicate clearly and effectively with the entire project team.
Crew Development : Train and mentor crew members, helping them to improve their skills and advance within the company.
Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Qualifications :
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in construction or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a foreman or supervisor in heavy civil construction, with experience in highway, bridge, or underground utility projects.
- Strong knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, materials, and equipment, including grading, earthwork, concrete, and structural work.
- Proven ability to lead and manage large crews and subcontractors in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong understanding of construction safety regulations (OSHA) and commitment to enforcing safe work practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, project plans, and specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and construction management software.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as needed.
