The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Part-Time Veterinary Care Technician (RVT). Work involves assisting a veterinarian in technical procedures and activities involving animal health and disease within a specialty area of the Veterinary Medical Center including surgery (LA / SA), equine medicine, Internal Medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, radiology and farm animal.
Performs a variety of animal care responsibilities under the close supervision of an RVT Supervisor and clinical veterinarians.
Specific duties will be determined by assigned area of responsibility and may involve floating or cross-training through various areas to develop skills and technique.
Mastery of basic veterinary technician skills are required : Basic and advanced nursing skills such as cleaning wounds, changing bandages, bathing, restraint, and observing patients for potential signs of distress as well the ability to use specialized equipment and / or perform specialized support related to the specialty service, medication administration, calculations, vital sign measurement, laboratory test performance, aseptic techniques, medical record documentation, technical communication, customer services and policy and procedure compliance and radiological techniques (including MRI, CT, etc.
Mastery of the following knowledge areas : knowledge of the principles of animal science, knowledge of specialty service practices, protocols and procedures, knowledge of the principles and practices of the maintenance of animal health and of nursing ill or injured animals and knowledge of basic radiation safety.
Mastery of the following abilities : Ability to prepare animals for procedures and / or surgery including selection of appropriate equipment and instruments, ability to read and record data from animal health monitoring equipment, ability to perform and understand a wide variety of technical laboratory tests to measure animal health conditions, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, ability to work under the direct supervision of a veterinarian, ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to instruct others.
