POSITION PURPOSE

The Wellness Center plays an important role in promoting student well-being by nurturing interconnectedness and the fundamental dignity of every person through the care of the individual.

The Wellness Center utilizes evidence-based initiatives to promote a culture of holistic health that empowers students to make informed decisions and develop self-efficacy and communal care in their intellectual, spiritual, social, physical, and emotional well-being.

The Assistant Director for Violence Prevention oversees the development and implementation of culturally-contextualized, trauma-informed interpersonal violence programming and education at Santa Clara University.

They report to the Director of the Wellness Center. Providing intentional care and prioritization to people impacted by systemic and interpersonal violence, this position serves as a thought-partner and campus-leader in the visionary work of violence prevention.

Through inclusive collaboration, this position co-creates spaces of safety, witnessing, truth-telling, and healing to support the full flourishing of every student.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide leadership to Santa Clara University and the Division of Student Life by researching, developing, and implementing comprehensive, culturally-contextualized, trauma-informed violence prevention programs.

Ensure cultural competence and respond effectively in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population;

understanding the needs of historically undeserved communities, including students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, and international students.

Partner with SCU’s Inclusive Excellence Division in social justice and anti-violence initiatives.

  • Serve as a University employee who is attentive to compliance with Title IX, Violence Against Women Act, Campus Sexual Assault Victims’ Bill of Rights, Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, the Clery Act, and other related legislation.
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff and administration regarding violence prevention, survivor advocacy resources, and policies and procedures.
  • Respond to requests from campus partners for programming and training.

2. Conduct workshops, trainings, events and create conversation spaces to educate SCU students in primary and secondary prevention efforts.

Contextualize violence prevention work within the socio-economic model, honoring how harm impacts at structural, systemic, institutional, community, and individual / interpersonal levels.

Increase awareness and understanding about various forms of interpersonal harm including sexual assault, relationship and intimate partner violence, stalking, hazing, harassment, discrimination, bystander intervention, and the support resources available.

  • Provide content knowledge on building comprehensive sexual health programs including embodiment, self-love, positive sexuality, and sexual health within a Jesuit, Catholic university.
  • Promote student wellness and educate the campus community about current student trends and their impacts.
  • Partner with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX as needed on the conceptualization and implementation of violence prevention education.

3. Supervise and mentor the Violence Prevention Educators (VPEs), a team of dedicated students engaged in anti-violence work and peer education through meaningful education and community conversations about various forms of harm including sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and discrimination.

  • Recruit, hire, onboard and train the VPE team (hired in the spring for the upcoming academic year).
  • Serve as a thought-partner on concerns facing the student community and developing ideas and collaboration opportunities for primary and secondary prevention.
  • Oversee the team’s programming and education process from idea generation through marketing, content development, implementation, and evaluation.

4. Develop and serve as co-chair or chairperson for a campus-wide coalition focused on violence prevention, with inter-disciplinary, multi-department involvement from across campus and the wider community including students, faculty, and staff.

Maintain partnerships with off-campus agencies.

5. Participate in strategic planning and quality improvement activities including the development and evaluation of short- and long-term program goals.

  • Research and develop resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
  • Prepare progress reports, inform supervisor of project status, and deviation from goals or timelines. Ensure completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
  • Prepare and submit reports as requested and / or required.
  • Develop and implement guidelines to support the functions of the Wellness Center.

6. Remain current on strategies, programs, national trends, and theories pertaining to implementing evidence-based programs related to interpersonal violence prevention, survivor advocacy, health promotion, and alcohol and substance use education on college campuses.

Attend local and national conferences for the purpose of advancing the work of the department and professional development.

7. Collaborate on major Wellness Center programming events for Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Stalking and Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month.

8. Promote and participate in inter-departmental communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Assist with Wellness Center communications, marketing, and web presence.

9. Additional Responsibilities :

  • Teach Violence Prevention Education courses to interested students, including Violence Prevention Educators (VPEs)
  • Provide confidential advocacy support to primary and secondary survivors of the SCU community
  • Generate and submit proposals for additional funding to support innovative initiatives.
  • Monitor the administration of online prevention education programs.
  • Serve on University committees as appropriate.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Receives work direction from the Director for the Wellness Center.

Education and / or Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Master's degree in public health, social work, counseling, psychology, health science, student services or equivalent education in a closely related field preferred.
  • 75-Hour Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Counselor Certification or agreement to obtain certification within the first year.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible work in an academic setting or related field required. Expertise in areas such as relationship violence, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, discrimination, justice work, and bystander intervention.

Expertise in areas of health and wellness issues and promotions in a college environment, or similar experience, such as alcohol and drug prevention / harm reduction, collegiate recovery, mental health, body image, etc. preferred.
