Job Description

General Summary

Cultivates a professional practice environment by coordinating the Magnet process, assisting with document preparation, maintaining related databases, and supporting professional development.

Identifies nursing quality indicators, developmental needs, performance improvement and research initiatives and other activities that sustain and advance the program.

Serves as an ambassador of the program employing a variety of communication strategies. This position collaborates with leaders and staff using the ANCC Magnet framework of excellence to create and implement innovative staff engagement, systems and processes.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.

  • Implements change management strategies to ensure successful execution of the Magnet program. Coordinates and evaluates programs and activities to advance a culture of excellence, including special events, ongoing Magnet campaign and various communication strategies.
  • Assumes an active role in promoting professional and other work environment initiatives, e.g., engages and mentors nurses to engage in performance improvement, evidence-based practice, research, and to advance publications and presentations.
  • Plans, develops and implements initiatives within documented timeframe(s) to ensure the goals of the program are met which includes supporting the coordination of the Magnet application, document submission, site visit and / or re-designation processes and interim reporting submission.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies throughout the organization to ensure accurate information regarding program purpose, initiatives, improvement strategies, and outcomes.

Supports the dissemination of information around initiatives across the organization.

  • Serves as a resource in integrating the Magnet standards to support successful outcomes and implementing shared decision-making through shared governance at the unit and hospital-wide level to ensure that the organization milieu reflects the internalization of the five components of the Magnet Model®.
  • Mentors and supports shared governance at the unit, hospital-wide and system levels.
  • Works with leaders in the management of empirical outcome data for Magnet designation including but not limited to RN satisfaction, nurse sensitive clinical indicators, patient experience, nursing turnover, violence against nursing data.

Supports and participates in the collection and distribution of annual data on nursing workforce.

  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure collection, correlation, analysis and generation of detailed reports and integrated quality data to Management and other key stakeholders regarding Magnet Recognition Program.
  • Manages human and fiscal resources to meet goals and achieve outcomes within the Magnet Recognition Program and the Clinical Practice and Professional Development Department.
  • Manage recruitment, selection and orientation of staff to support Magnet Recognition Program goals.
  • Conduct performance reviews, and performance management on direct report staff.
  • Contributes to improving nurse satisfaction / engagement by serving as a role model in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication, which includes active listening, and facilitating teamwork with RNs to include support of clinical nurses and managers with action plan development and implementation.
  • Assists in the development of informational / educational resources for Management and front-line staff, provides education and assists in implementing strategies to respond to new program requirements and opportunities for improvement.
  • Promotes the image of Nursing and Recognition of Nursing Excellence.
  • Creates an atmosphere which fosters teamwork and open communication among team members. Models effective behaviors as facilitator, coach and group leader.
  • Collaborates with department leadership in the implementation, improvement, and evaluation of the organization’s nursing professional practice model and nursing care delivery models across the organization
  • Lead the development of the nursing annual / bi-annual report in collaboration with other nursing and patient care service leaders.
  • Attends workshops and other educational programs, to ensure awareness of current developments and trends in the Magnet program.

Stays up-to-date with professional organizations standards and submit abstracts to national conferences.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s in nursing is required.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact State agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing, is required.
  • Three (3) years previous experience in nursing and / or nursing leadership is required.
  • Two (2) years prior experience with project / program management in a Magnet health care setting preferred.
  • National Nursing Certification in Nursing Administration, Leadership, Clinical Specialty, or Staff Development preferred.

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication, presentation and interpersonal skills are required to work successfully with various levels of clinical, administrative and management personnel including senior executives.
  • Knowledge of shared decision-making strategies including shared / professional governance with demonstration of success in implementation of shared / professional governance.
  • Knowledge of Magnet Recognition Program from the American Nurses Credentialing Center with demonstration of implementation of standards.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
