Project Controls Specialist

Position Summary :

Functions primarily as the cost controller for projects but may be required to perform scheduling duties as needed. Provides cost and schedule information needed to manage projects in compliance with the objectives of the cost and revenue budgets.

May assist Lead Project Cost Controller or Lead Project Scheduler on projects that have larger, more complex scopes of work.

Key Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Responsible for cost control functions such as verifying, inputting, updating, monitoring and maintaining project budgets
  • Performs scheduling functions such as preparing logic-driven, resource-laden schedule reports, critical path analysis, earned value analysis and resource usage
  • Assists with earned value progress measurement
  • Develops and maintains Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and resource loading
  • Provides and monitors project cost estimates, expenditures, forecasts and trend analysis
  • Responsible for the integrity and accuracy of cost data
  • Submits and explains the reporting metrics to project team members and management for use in making project-specific decisions
  • Provides assistance to Project Controls Manager in the preparation or revision of department procedures, policies and training programs
  • Participates in client, internal project management and departmental meetings, to include delivering presentations
  • Interacts with Project Managers, Engineers and other personnel in regards to project cost analysis
  • Responsible for following corporate safety protocols

Complexity, Decision-Making, Problem Solving & Nature of Impact, (i.e., Scope) :

  • Independent decision making
  • Understands the finance and accounting system (JD Edwards)
  • Understands the timekeeping and expense system (TESS) to include reporting and data analysis
  • Conforms to and utilizes established cost control standards
  • Responsible for understanding each project’s Project Execution Plan
  • Supports the efforts of project teams
  • Proactively manages changes in project scope, identifies potential crisis issues, and develops contingency plans that account for Company contractual requirements
  • Understands and interprets reports generated for analysis, and the impact to the project
  • Determines project anomalies and reports to project team for resolution
  • Solid understanding of all areas of the business with regard to project planning and scheduling

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Intermediate knowledge of Project Management Processes (PMI)
  • Intermediate knowledge of financial concepts, cost, scheduling and change management
  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to understand and work toward project and deliverable deadlines
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload for self
  • Ability to plan a project’s scope of work to assist project management team build and baseline project schedules
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to prepare written graphical and technical information from all aspects of the schedule (i.e. histograms, S-curves, deployment schedules, etc.)
  • Demonstrates a willingness and ability to learn new processes and software
  • Intermediate level analytical skills
  • Knowledge of estimating processes, resource allocations and scheduling processes

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) preferred
  • Typically five to ten years of experience related to project cost control or scheduling
  • Knowledge of onshore and offshore engineering and design industry preferred
  • PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred
  • AACEi certification preferred
  • JD Edwards and Dynamics experience preferred
  • Microsoft Office experience required
