To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the appropriate level of patient care according to the scope of practice approved by the State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire and Transportation Services and the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS, Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati Southwest Ohio Protocols, Commission on Accreditation for Medical Transport Systems as well as organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY) :

Engages in population-appropriate communication.

Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.

Gives clear instructions to patients / family regarding treatment.

Involves family / guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.

Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.

Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients / families with behavioral health problems.

Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.

Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms.

Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.

Recognizes and responds to signs / symptoms of abuse or neglect.

Patient Care :

Possess knowledge and skill to ensure assessments are pertinent and accurate. Independently implements a comprehensive, scope specific plan of care that addresses the physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and their family before and throughout transport in collaboration with other healthcare providers.

Evaluates the care that is provided and responds appropriately.

Possesses and demonstrates advanced knowledge and clinical skills to provide advanced level assessment(s), intervention and evaluation necessary to ensure safe and efficient transport of the critically ill or injured patient.

Ability to perform advanced level life-saving skills as determined by patient condition including the following but not limited to : Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management including emergency airway management, ventilator management, cardiac defibrillation, excessive bleeding control, trauma management including spine stabilization, splinting of limbs, Cervical spine immobilization rapid extrication procedures, chest tube monitoring and management, 12 lead EKG set up, performance and interpretation.

Ability to perform basic level point of care lab testing as ordered or by protocol.

Ability to obtain and interpret vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and end tidal CO 2 monitoring).

Medication management within scope of practice.

Maintenance of blood administration.

Transport patients with a central / peripheral IV / IO without an infusion, IV maintenance and fluid administration, central line monitoring, IV pump management.

Emergency birth management

In the event of emergency declaration, Paramedic may provide immunizations and medication administration under physician approval and proper training.

Posses the ability to calculate and administer medications within their scope of practice and department protocols.

Serves as a patient advocate and defends the patient's right to privacy and confidentiality.

Completes and demonstrates proficiently all required department and organizational competencies and educational requirements.

Participates in improving organizational performance; evaluates the effectiveness of established programs and makes recommendations for change to improve upon the quality of patient care and their outcomes.

Maintains accurate records :

Completes patient documentation and all transport records thoroughly, timely and per department policies.

Completes required operational paperwork thoroughly and ensures proper functioning of equipment and vehicles; reports any deficiencies or concerns in a timely manner.

Reports to any satellite or staging base(s) for work assignments as needed for operational efficiency.

Takes initiative to obtain information related to department operations by, but not limited to : attending meetings, reviewing meetings minutes, reading department generated e-mails, newsletters and other formats of communication in a timely manner (every week at a minimum).

Completes special assignments and other duties as assigned.

Safety :

Assures a safe patient care environment

Communicates pertinent patient information

Demonstrates critical thinking skills and involvement in problem solving

Maintains patient's needs for privacy and confidentiality during all communication

Adheres to all hospital policies

Ensures that work areas are organized, clean and present a safe, effective and efficient environment for self, patients and other colleagues.

Conducts daily operations in a safe manner.

Successfully demonstrates knowledge of safe emergency vehicle operations / emergency egress operations and other state and federal rules and regulations.

Also demonstrate defensive driving techniques.

Responds to transports and other requests in a safe and timely manner.

Secures and handles equipment with appropriate devices to assure crew and patient safety in the transport environment.

When working in a vehicle co-pilot role, Paramedics will be able to assist in navigation i.e. GPS input, understands department policy on lights and sirens response and monitor vehicle operator for fatigue / impairment.

Reports any safety concerns in a timely manner and uses the appropriate process for doing so.

Responsible for the safety and securing of UC Health vehicle at any location.

Professionalism :

Remains current and active in the paramedic field and / or the medical transport industry.

Has a concept of self development; recognizes the need for professional growth and takes the appropriate steps toward meeting educational needs.

Seeks on-going professional development through participation in patient care conferences, professional committees, in-services, and continuing education activities above minimal requirements for licensure / certification renewals.

Identifies and assumes responsibility for learning needs and if needed complete applicable clinical rotations or clinical experiences to ensure clinical competency.

Remains current in all required job specific licensures, certifications and competencies.

Willingly explores as well as accepts and implements new industry standards in order to strive for higher quality outcomes.

Contributes to the growth of peers by sharing own knowledge, experience and skills.

Educates healthcare professionals and other customers regarding the operation of the transport program (includes orienting new associates as assigned).

Qualifications

Minimum Required : High school graduate or GED. Current Ohio Paramedic certification required. National Registry preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required upon hire. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)within initial probationary period.

Approved Trauma Life Support course. Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) to be obtained within probationary period. FEMA 100, 200 courses within initial probationary period.

Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or its equivalency (s) must be obtained within probationary period. Active, unrestricted Driver's License with no more than 4 accrued points.

Minimum Required : Willing to certify, license or graduate within 12 months.
