Overview
Provides forensic consulting services requiring Civil Engineering expertise for insurance, legal, industrial, and other clients. Assesses and determines the cause and origin of structural failures and / or damage, building envelope failures and / or damage, construction defects, and the extent and repairability of such failures and / or damage. Provides oral and written reports of findings and, when needed, expert testimony. Manages multiple projects. Travel locally and regionally approximately 50% of the time, with less than 5% overnight travel. The candidate must reside in or around Richmond, VA. This is a remote position with local / regional travel expectations.
Responsibilities
- Performs the investigation and analysis of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to resolve claims and legal matters.
- Performs forensic assignments within civil engineering based on a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client in advance of performing the work.
- Field investigations to determine the cause and origin of construction defects or structural failures and determine the extent and repairability of such failures or damage; gather photographic evidence, conduct on-site investigations, interviews, oversee field testing, review drawings / contracts / specifications, and review historical documentation.
- Prepare oral and written reports documenting causes of failure and / or damage, extent of loss, repair scope, and recommended remediation; provide opinions and expert testimony in litigation matters when needed.
- Manage multiple projects, coordinating with other experts and support as needed to produce client reports in a timely manner.
- Ensure safety and due diligence on projects and maintain professional conduct in all operations.
- Initiate, develop, and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.
Requirements
B.S. Civil Engineering or higher.Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensed.2-10+ years of experience.Project management and / or field investigation experience preferred.Other licenses or certifications may be required depending on location.Skills and Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills.Excellent organizational and time management skills.High level of analytical skills with attention to detail; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Ability to interact with clients at all levels.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer-aided engineering / design software.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents and reports.Ability to write scopes of work, budgets, schedules, reports, proposals, and other technical documents.Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients and present information to management, clients, and boards as needed.Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel
Physical Demands : Work is performed in office settings and at various outside locations; frequently requires standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, crawling, driving to job sites, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires clear vision and depth perception.
Overtime : This is a salaried exempt position. Regular hours are 8 : 00 a.m. – 5 : 00 p.m., Monday–Friday with occasional overtime as needed.
Travel : Up to 50% local / regional travel; less than 5% outside the area and overnight. Position is based in / around Richmond, VA.
