  • Reporting to the Associate Director of Internships and Social Impact Professions, and ultimately to the Associate Vice Provost for Career and Professional Development, the Career Specialist works individually and in groups with all LMU students and in particular students from the Seaver College of Science and Engineering to support their career development;
  • pursuit of internships, employment, and experiential learning opportunities in healthcare; graduate school preparedness;

and successful launch into post-graduate professional life.

The Specialist is a content expert in the career and professional development needs and outcomes of students interested in health-related careers and serves as the primary coordinator for customized services, programs, and resources.

Additionally, the specialist will provide coaching across all Schools / Colleges for those students at the undergraduate and graduate level who are interested in health careers (i.

e. medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, health systems administration, patient advocacy, community health, psychiatry, etc.).

Position Specific Accountabilities

Provide individual and group coaching to undergraduate and graduate students interested in health professions as well as coach pre-medical post-baccalaureate program students.

Provide general individual and group coaching to students regarding career exploration and discernment, skills development, graduate / professional school preparation including interviewing and personal statements, and strategic job and internship search.

Coordinate and facilitate workshops, information sessions, employer site visits, graduate / professional school prep workshops, and industry panels to introduce students to a range of healthcare and medical careers.

Develop and manage programs, services, and resources that promote career development, vocational discernment, and outcomes for students interested in health professions.

Regularly meet with the Director of Health Professions Advising within the Center for Student Success to strategize on programming, coaching, and external engagement.

Support Director with review of resumes / curriculum vitae and personal statements. In collaboration with the Director, coordinate, track, and report annually on student matriculation into graduate / professional school within health professions.

Collaborate with the CPD Employer Relationst team to cultivate and promote internship and employment opportunities on Handshake at local healthcare sites designed to give students access to clinical, administrative, and public health experience.

Work with faculty, administrators, and alumni to cultivate experiential opportunities. Promote opportunities and clarify the application process for students.

Supervise up to two student staff members in CPD known as peer advisors, with a focus on pre-health and health professions.

On-board and guide peer advisors in developing relevant content for workshops, health webpages, and event management. Engage peer advisors in sourcing opportunities and panelists and train in the facilitation of workshops.

Serve as the point-person for external stakeholders who have an interest in speaking or mentoring pre-health students. Plan and execute health-focused panels (virtual and in-person), featuring industry professionals, admission counselors, alumni, and recruiters.

Collaborate on event calendaring and planning with Seaver College of Science and Engineering, health-related student clubs and organizations, and campus partners including the Academic Community of Excellence, McNair Scholars Program, and other cohorts with a focus on graduate / professional school or health professions.

Build and maintain relationships with graduate / professional schools in the health professions field. Co-plan and execute the Graduate School Fair with the Associate Director, Graduate Programs and Education Professions;

identify programs of interest to students and engage admission recruiters to participate in the Fair and other programs.

Research and promote new healthcare career pathways. Maintain membership in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Participate in regional associations, national conferences, and professional development opportunities through the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE).

Develop and maintain the health professions physical and digital content for the CPD website, social media, and specialized resources for students and alumni.

Participate in the program planning, strategic direction, and daily operations of CPD.

Contribute to CPD’s assessment efforts, preparing reports, analyzing results, and establishing and measuring learning outcomes of programs and services.

Serve as an active contributor for the Division of Enrollment Management and the Office of Career and Professional Development, participating in university-wide programs including admission events, orientations, and committees as requested.

Teach an online academic internship course through CPD for students participating in health-related internships; grade assignments, build curriculum, and communicate with students regularly to support their internship experience and professional development.

Share regular content to the Seaver College Health Professions Advising newsletter.

Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications

Typically a Master Degree (M.A., M.Ed., M.P.H., other) in counseling, human resources or related field or equivalent experience.

Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation / policy changes.

Minimum of three years of experience in healthcare, higher education, career services, student affairs, human resources, employer relations, and / or experiential education.

Knowledge of health / medical career pathways, professions, and opportunities for exploration, exposure, and learning.

Demonstrated experience in student career development theory; experiential education; teaching / training; and program development, marketing, delivery, and assessment.

Exemplary written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated technical competencies : including Microsoft Office applications, career management platforms (e.g. Handshake), web development, and social media.

Effective organizational and collaborative skills.

Strong facilitation and teaching skills.

Team player with solid interpersonal skills.

Ability to partner with faculty, staff, student leaders, administrators, employers, alumni, and health professionals.

Event planning and production skills.

Demonstrated experience in in the development, assessment, and reporting of learning outcomes and other measurements for data collection.
