We are hiring a Director of Therapeutic Recreation to join our dynamic team at Summit Commons Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Providence!

Summit Commons is a 130-bed skilled nursing facility. This role reports directly to the administrator and is a department head.

As the Director of Therapeutic Recreation, you plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operations of the recreation department.

Experience & Education :

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • One (1) year experience or training in directing group activities required.
  • Must meet one of the following criteria : (a) eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990;
  • b) has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic activities program;

c) Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or (d) Has completed a training course approved by the State.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Assists in plans and provisions of patient care by visiting residents regularly to evaluate needs.
  • Oversee staffing for the department including recruitment efforts.
  • Document and report to the nursing department any unusual or significant findings.
  • Encourage residents to take part in activities of daily living that will stimulate his / her potential, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
  • Spend duty time with residents rather than with other facility staff.
  • Assist with and follow through on the establishment of resident care goals within the framework of the entire therapeutic team.

Specific Requirements :

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel and the general public.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must participate in continuing education and inservice training.
