Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE :

It is the responsibility of the teaching faculty to provide the learning activities and support that will lead to the achievement of the course objectives and contribute to the educational environment of the college and the community.

Primary responsibilities are to plan, develop and teach courses within the curriculum in a manner that facilitates student learning.

CE Adjunct faculty are hired in a part-time capacity on a semester-by-semester basis, contingent upon the needs of the System.

Lone Star College accepts application material year-round from qualified applicants willing to teach on a part-time basis.

Adjunct (part-time) faculty hiring is based on student demand. We offer day, evening, and weekend classes. Classes are offered at various times and locations during the academic year.

As a rule, adjunct faculty may teach a maximum of five classes per academic year.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Teach one or more modules within the Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) in accordance with standards established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • Course topics include : Fitness, Wellness, and Stress Management; TCOLE Rules; Multiculturalism and Human Relations; Racial Profiling;
  • U.S. and Texas Constitutions and Civil Rights; Penal Code; Code of Criminal Procedure; Arrest, Search, and Seizure; Asset Forfeiture;
  • Identity Crimes; Consular Notification; Civil Process; Health and Safety Code and Controlled Substance Act; Alcoholic Beverage Code;
  • Family Violence, Child Victims, and Related Assaultive Offenses; Missing and Exploited Children; Child Alert Check List;
  • Victims of Crime; Human Trafficking; Traffic Code / Crash Investigation; Intoxicated Driver (SFST); Written Communication;
  • Verbal Communication / Public Interaction; Spanish; De-Escalation Strategies; Force Options Theory; Crisis Intervention Team;
  • Traumatic Brain Injury; Arrest and Control; Criminal Investigations; Juvenile Offenders; Professional Police Driving; Patrol Skills / Traffic Stops;
  • Radio Communications / Amber-Silver Alert / TCIC-TLETS; Civilian Interaction Training; Interacting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing;

Canine Encounters; Emergency Medical Assistance; Firearms; TASER Certification; Hazardous Materials Awareness / ICS

  • Provides instruction according to institutional needs, making continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods
  • Develops and uses a syllabus / lesson plan for each course within college and departmental guidelines
  • Evaluates students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and informs them in a timely manner of their progress in the course;

Identifies and assesses students who need additional instruction to successfully complete the course objectives

  • Maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
  • Responsible for managing their classrooms and labs to ensure state requirements are met
  • Attends meetings, trainings, and orientations as required
  • Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

  • Skilled in the Windows environment with basic proficiency with common office software

PHYSICAL ABILITIES :

The work, depending on the unit of curriculum being taught, may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas

WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS :

Law Enforcement Equipment used includes, Law Enforcement related firearms, including pump- action shotgun, and multiple caliber revolvers and semi-automatic handguns, and related safety equipment;

Law Enforcement training vehicles, and related safety and set-up equipment; Handcuffs, Defensive Training Batons, and related safety equipment

  • Office Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a multi-climate environment : Office with minimal exposure to safety hazards, as well as in indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to weather and safety hazards typical of those within the Law Enforcement training profession

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • High School Diploma and 10 years of experience as a Police Officer or working in the criminal justice system
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • TCOLE Instructor Certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • TCOLE Firearms Instructor Certification
  • TCOLE Emergency Vehicle Operations Certification

Salary

$55.81 per contact hour.
