What General Information Do I Need to Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months / years with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Salary : WG-06 : $27.53 (Rate 01) to $32.08 (Rate 05);

NOTE : First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

As a Drill Rig Operator within the Research Drilling Program, some of your specific duties will include :

  • Operates drilling related equipment under the direct supervision of lead and journeyman drill rig operators at intermittent intervals as part of on-the-job training.
  • Assists drillers in performance of routine maintenance on all equipment. Assists with repairs,

greasing and lubrication of equipment under supervision of drilling foreman.

  • As directed by lead driller onsite, performs all drilling related tasks such as mixing and pumping grout, ensuring mud is mixed and balanced, mud system is functioning, unloads trucks and trailers, makes water and fuel runs, and works the table or trailer while tripping drill pipe in our out.
  • Responsible for keeping equipment clean and helping with all other tasks in order to make the project successful. Keeps work areas clear and assists with restoration of drill sites after completion of the work as directed by the drill rig operator.
  • Maintains small tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, axes, picks, mattocks, shovels, and chain tongs in satisfactory condition.

Obtains tools for operator and returns tools to storage kit at completion of operations.

Additional Requirements of the Job :

  • Must operate a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
  • Work days are typically 12 hour shifts in strenuous conditions and extreme weather.
  • Lifting objects up to 100 lbs will be required.
  • Climbing and working at heights 30' to 40' feet above ground will be required.

Physical Effort :

Drill rig operation work involves standing for prolonged periods, walking, bending, pushing, reaching,

pulling, lifting and working long shifts. Work days are typically 12 hours per day and sometimes more.

Machinery control work is done in close proximity to rotating drill shaft or tool hammering operations,

requiring quick reflex action to respond to drilling problems. Frequently handles objects weighing 40 to

100 pounds and occasionally, tools, samples, and equipment that are heavier.

Working Conditions :

Work on sites requires the wearing of protective gear against possible exposure to chemical hazards.

Use of specified personal protective equipment is mandatory. Works in all kinds of weather, frequently in wet, muddy, and dry conditions, exposed to poison growth, reptiles, insects, and under noisy conditions.

Exposed to cuts and bruises in using tools and working around moving machinery, strains while breaking or adding joints to drive shaft, slips and falls in wet weather, and the possibility of electric shock or bums. And

travel typically up to 21 days in the field without time off.

Key Requirements :

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.

  • A valid Class B Comercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required as a condition of employment. You will be expected to obtain a valid CDL within one year after reporting for duty.

Failure to obtain or maintain a CDL will result in the termination of appointment

Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam and drug test.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Drug Test & Pre-Employment Medical - Prior to appointment, the selectee is required to take and pass, at Federal expense : (1) a physical exam;

and (2) a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the incumbent may be subject to random drug testing.

You will operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle as part of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements :

1) Have a valid State CDL License or be able to Obtain such within 90 days of hire.

2) Provide a copy of your driving record.

3) If selected , you are required to provide proof of a valid State CDL License & a copy of your driving record.

Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.

Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.

Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants resume must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job-related task statements in this announcement.

Screen-Out Element : Without more than normal supervision, applicants must be able to perform Drill Rig Operator task / duties : Assist the Drill Rig Operator with setting up drill rig equipment, operate truck mounted top-head drive drill rig.

Operate and perform basic maintenance / repair of drill rigs, water trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment.

These and similar tasks must be accomplished without more than normal supervision.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Additional information

Incentive Possible : A recruitment incentive of $2,500 MAY be authorized in filling this position. Incentive payments should be 50% paid at 6 months of employment with a balance paid out at 9 months with an expected retention period of 1 year.
