Job Description

The Head Volleyball Coach at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is responsible for leading and directing all aspects of the women's volleyball program within the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) framework.

This role encompasses recruiting talented student-athletes, organizing, and conducting practices, developing game strategies, managing team dynamics, and ensuring compliance with NJCAA regulations, while also working with the Athletic Director to complete season schedule.

The Head Coach plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and academic achievement within the volleyball program while maintaining a competitive advantage.

The description and parameters of the head coaching duties are as assigned :

The Head Coach is responsible to :

  • Formulate the team's competitive schedule in cooperation with the Athletic Director.
  • Plan and effectuate a sound pre-season training program.
  • Create and implement a summer training program.
  • Plan for all team practices to maximize time, effort, safety, and skill.
  • Make necessary arrangements for all home games, i.e., shoot around times for both teams, press commitments, booster club activities.
  • Supervise the team on all trips.
  • Plan for travel arrangements.
  • Make sure teams are on time for scheduled events, dressed appropriately for the occasion.
  • Monitor and encourage the academic progress of student-athletes, oversee the academic scheduling for transferable credits and plan for graduation.

The head coach will attend graduation.

  • Respond appropriately to all emergencies as they occur. Notify Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer in a timely manner.
  • Provide for the safety and welfare of team members.

Additionally, the Head Coach shall :

  • Serve as a willing participant in Athletic Department meetings, projects, and functions.
  • Accept additional committee assignments as requested.
  • Maintain a personal and professional balance in the demands of athletics and academics on student-athletes.
  • Participate where possible in local, regional, and national coaching and athletic governing bodies.
  • Keep informed of current trends, methods, and rules in the sports area.
  • Coach knowledgeably and work effectively with all student-athletes.
  • Promote the team, program, and college professionally while promoting positive and productive working relationships with all other staff members.
  • Foster loyalty, good sportsmanship, and dedication to any endeavor.
  • Motivate self, staff, and student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential.
  • Do an appropriate number of public relations and departmental work.
  • Set an appropriate professional example for student-athletes to emulate on and off the court.
  • Deal effectively with various public and booster club groups to promote the respective sports programs.

GENERAL PRESEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct a team meeting with the Athletic Director to cover team rules and department rules.
  • Initiate NJCAA eligibility verification list for all team members with the Registrar's office.
  • Advertise and select team manager.
  • Initiate a team roster on approved departmental form.
  • Schedule practice times with the AD as appropriate.
  • Plan and conduct practices with assistant coaches. Follow all conference and NJCAA guidelines.
  • Arrange weight room use with facilitator and other coaches.
  • Plan and conduct conditioning program.
  • Plan team travel arrangements for season
  • Arrange for physical examinations with the team physician prior to practice. The Athletic Trainer can assist with arrangements.

GENERAL MID-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and conduct practices in assigned facilities.
  • Arrange and supervise team travel.
  • Provide accounting of travel expenses upon return. Requests turned in after 30 days (about 4 and a half weeks) may be refused.
  • Provide travel itinerary to players, office manager, and AD.
  • Work closely with athletic trainer on the injury status and the rehabilitation of players.
  • Frequently monitor budget status to remain within budget.
  • Schedule and conduct campus recruiting visits as appropriate.
  • Monitor student-athletes academic progress and class attendance closely.
  • Remind student-athletes to visit professors prior to any scheduled road trips for assignments and to keep dialog with professors.
  • Secure additional academic help for players, as necessary.

GENERAL POST OR OFF-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish a budget in cooperation with AD in June.
  • Update all academic records with the academic advisor.
  • Complete any conference report forms with the Sports Information Director.
  • Complete scheduling for next year and arrange for contracts with AD.
  • Continue on-campus recruiting and home visits as appropriate.
  • Make scholarship and letter of intent (LOI) offers after verifying playing eligibility status of recruits.
  • Once the student-athlete signs a LOI, have the office manager file the appropriate paperwork, initiate formal eligibility verification process with the Registrar's Office and notify the Financial Aid and Housing Office.
  • Prepare special equipment orders with AD.
  • Arrange for summer school as appropriate. Notify AD of the number of student-athletes needing summer school and who plans to pay for the expense.
  • Arrange for summer camps as appropriate.

GENERAL SUMMER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct summer camp(s) as appropriate.
  • Correspond with signed student-athletes to prepare for next year.
  • Monitor summer academic schedules and progress.
  • Supervise student-athletes on campus during the summer session.
  • Make sure new student athletes are prepared with the appropriate college information when they arrive.
  • Attend any required department and Booster Club activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Previous coaching experience
