Position Description :
University of Iowa Health Care seeks its inaugural Chief Physician Executive. University of Iowa Health Care represents the integrated healthcare enterprise of the University of Iowa, which includes the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center and all affiliated clinics, UI Carver College of Medicine, and UI Physicians.
The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States and sits adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
As University of Iowa Health Cares clinical enterprise has grown to serve the needs of more patients and communities across Iowa, there is an identified need for a physician leader to oversee quality across the entire health system including hospitals, physician groups, and at current and future affiliate sites of care.
The Chief Physician Executive will be responsible for ensuring efficient and patient-centered care throughout the health system while positioning Iowa to be successful in an increasingly competitive healthcare landscape.
As the senior physician leader of the clinical enterprise, the Chief Physician Executive will provide leadership to integrate clinical care across all entities of the system, while advancing and continuously improving quality, patient safety, and operations of the health system.
The Chief Physician Executive will create system-wide clinical standards that add value and align with the University of Iowa Health Care mission, vision, values, and guiding principles.
The Chief Physician Executive will have a commitment to providing superior patient outcomes by leading in the delivering of safe, high quality, efficient and patient-centered care.
Appointment may be to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor level on either the clinical or tenure track, consistent with clinical experience and research interest.
The successful candidate may become a member of one or more departments participating in this recruitment.

Education Requirement :
MD or DO degree, or equivalent, is required.
Required Qualifications :
- Must be eligible for either a tenure or clinical track faculty appointment at the University of Iowa at the rank of associate or full professor.
- Must have active board certification and must be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the state of Iowa.
- Progressive senior leadership experience in an extensive, multi-site academic health system or integrated academic delivery network.
- Demonstrated experience managing a sizable clinical enterprise's operations and creating and building new programs.
- Demonstrated skills in change management and process improvement, ideally within a high-growth healthcare system.
- Experience leading successful quality programs in a large academic healthcare system, including demonstrated success deploying high reliability systems to improve quality, safety, and patient experience.
- Strategic knowledge and understanding of EHRs, data science and analytics, and medical informatics, with demonstrated success in using these resources to drive continuous improvement in clinical outcomes, quality and safety, patient experience, and operational and financial performance.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desirable Qualifications :
- An MHA or MBA degree is desirable.
- An open and direct communication style with a collegial presence that encourages consensus building, collaboration, and cooperation to both foster and maintain strong relationships.
- Comfortable in the public domain with the ability to engage at the community level.
- A leadership style that assists others before oneself and holds others accountable to agreed upon objectives.
- A strong advocate for the clinical enterprise who negotiates well across all levels of the organization to support the clinical mission of UI Health Care.
