If you want an enormously fulfilling career, there’s no better place to be.

The Contact Dermatitis and Occupational Dermatology Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) specializes in identifying allergens using a non-invasive skin evaluation called patch testing.

The contact dermatitis evaluation facilitates identification of allergens that may be present in a variety of sources such as soaps, shampoos, moisturizers, topical medications, jewelry, and textiles.

Based on the results from this intricate process, a customized plan for allergen avoidance will be created for each patient.

Many patients are cured from their rashes after contact allergens are identified and avoided.

The Staff Nurse will be responsible for :

  • Providing patient-centered nursing support for patients within the Contact Dermatitis and Occupational Dermatology clinic.
  • Conducting patient triage, post-procedure follow-up, and determining disposition of care based on the nursing assessment.
  • Fulfilling nurse-only visits with a strong focus on initiating post-patch testing education and counseling and addressing all patient questions or concerns.

These visits may include, but are not limited to, providing detailed instructions and advice to patients about appropriate care and recommendations after patch removal, detailed review of MD treatment plan on final patch day, review of allergen-specific information, review of dietary information, and a detailed review of products and their ingredients in order to clarify patient questions and identify contact allergens in the products.

Extensive counseling and education will be completed over the phone, electronically, and / or in person.

  • Conducting patch testing final read visits and flowsheet documentation with physician support as needed.
  • Creating and implementing clinical care plans for patients, in collaboration with physicians.
  • Collaborating with nursing leadership and nursing clinical educators to design practice-specific trainings that will address clinical staff needs, as well as refreshers to review clinical workflows.
  • Modeling active participation in JC readiness, Magnet readiness, and other quality programs as needed.
  • Performing all clinic nursing functions, including but not limited to, dispensing allergens in preparation for patch testing visits (500-800+ allergens per session), marking, taping, and drawing diagrams for allergen placement, and queuing EPIC lab orders or executing orders according to protocol and in close collaboration with physicians.
  • Ensuring that ambulatory patients are seen promptly by the appropriate clinician(s) and that appropriate coordination of care and communication is maintained with the patients and referring providers.
  • Maintaining familiarity with department activity and a close working relationship with clinicians and support staff to provide the most appropriate triage and facilitate timely and effective communication and scheduling.
  • Preparing, performing, and documenting the coordination of clinical care including, but not limited to, contacting external companies regarding the investigation of contact allergen presence in specific products, composing work notes detailing the need for occupational modifications, drafting responses to disability forms, contacting pharmacies to obtain information about medication formulations, and calling compounding pharmacies to coordinate compounding medications in different dilutions for patch testing.
  • Participating in departmental and organizational quality improvement or clinical research projects as directed by the leadership team.
  • Proficient use of the electronic medical record, documenting in a manner that is clear, complete, concise, and in SBAR format when appropriate to remain compliant with nursing standards.
