The City of Hillsboro is searching for someone to keep our parks and community spaces beautiful! As a Parks Maintenance Technician, you will work with team of parks professionals to enhance the landscapes around the City.
This is a great opportunity to work hands-on in the field of public service for Parks & Recreation and Parks Maintenance - where you will enhance and positively impact our diverse community’s daily lives.
This position is based out of the 53rd Avenue Maintenance Facility and will work closely with the assigned coordinator, the Projects Team, as well as other employees including administrative staff, the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.
This role will work with our Projects Team but there is the potential to work in any of our functional work areas.
We are looking for someone who is eager to work and learn from our experienced staff and leadership team to provide a great experience for our park’s users.
The ideal candidate
Will have some background in construction basics, and concrete or ashpalt experience or the ability and willingness to learn these skills quickly.
This can include building, concrete and asphalt work, ability to operate tools and equipment from cordless tools all the way up to small excavators and loaders.
A CDL and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification would also be valuable in this role. (If you do not have a CPO certification, they would need to be able to successfully complete the course and pass the test within 6-months of hire.)
Employees in the Parks Maintenance Technician are essential personnel during periods of inclement weather or other emergency situations.
General Statement of Duties
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform basic routine parks maintenance and / or operational activities in assigned area of responsibility.
Responsibilities as assigned may include providing customer service; performing routine maintenance and repair of equipment, infrastructure, and / or related items;
operating motorized vehicles and equipment; inputting data into computerized systems; and preparing logs and records.

Examples of Essential Work
- Repair safety hazards in the parks to keep park users and staff safe
- Install, repair, or replace park amenities including benches, garbage cribs and other items as needed
- Safely operate the spray grounds in our parks during the summer season
- Install and maintain the ice rink for Winter Village each winter
- Possess basic carpentry skills or to have the ability to learn these skills and the safe use of the tools required to perform this work
Current / Upcoming Projects
- Installing the ice rink for Winter Village
- Installing site amenities in new parks prior to them opening to the public
- Addressing safety concerns in the parks to make areas safe for the park users
- Crack sealing and seal coating pathways in the parks and smaller parking lots
- Making necessary repairs to the bridges and boardwalks in the parks
- Preparing and staging parks equipment for potential inclement weather events
- Operating spray grounds with the Projects Team. Projects Team operates the spray grounds from Memorial Day until mid-September.
Someone from the team is scheduled to work every day through the season to make sure that fountains are functioning correctly and to do the required water chemistry checks to ensure a safe environment for the users.
Acceptable Experience and Training
High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of related work experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Bilingual Incentive Pay Available
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.
S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
Licensing / Certifications
Depending on assignment, some positions may require :
- Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.
- Oregon Public Pesticide Applicators License
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO Certification)
May be required to hold an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License based on assignment.
