Position Summary :

Under direct supervision of the Field Manager, this position maintains and operates all instruments and measuring devices needed to complete different types of land survey work assignments.

Responsibilities also include resolving problems in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

6 : 50 am to 3 : 20 pm Monday Friday.

This is a full-time position with a non-exempt (hourly) classification, with overtime paid for more than 40 hours worked in one week.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Operate land survey equipment including transit, level, GPS, theodolites, data collector, distance meter, ranger, chain, electrotype, and tellurometer.
  • Calculates angles and distances for points to be set; learns basic field calculations and procedures;
  • Sets reference stakes for construction layout or boundary designation;
  • Sees that equipment is safely loaded, unloaded, and stored each working day;
  • Sets up equipment in the field
  • Prepares supplies needed for a survey job;
  • Makes copies of field notes and reports;
  • Keeps survey vehicles clean and organized and in proper working order;
  • Trains Instrument Operator Trainee in duties and in the basic use of instruments;
  • Cleans instruments and may make minor adjustments; reports all malfunctions immediately to supervisor;
  • Keeps neat accurate survey field notes;
  • Performs other duties, as assigned. Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge Requirements :
  • Must know the field survey methods and techniques used in land surveying and mapping.
  • Must know about survey technology, including GPS.
  • Must know survey instruments used in the measurement and location of lines, elevations, areas, angles, points, and contours of the earth’s surface.
  • Work requires a good command of the English language and oral and written communication.
  • Must have basic skills in operating a personal computer and a variety of software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Must have the ability to operate, adjust, and maintain assigned equipment.
  • Must be able to precisely turn and read angular measurements, accurately point and read electronic equipment, give precise rod readings, and learn basic field calculations.
  • Must have familiarity with sets, repetitions, acceptable tolerance, and 3-wire levels.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively and respectfully with other employees, craftsmen, property owners, contractors and the public.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Must be able to travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • Must be able to traverse on foot distances up to 1 mile at a time; up to 5 miles per day.
  • Must be able to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

While performing the duties of this position, the Employee is regularly required to make continuous or repetitive hand-arm movement to send signals to a survey crew and remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.

May be required to move objects less than 20 pounds long distances (20 feet or more). May be required to move objects 20-60 pounds short distances (less than feet).

May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, outdoor elements and dust and potential physical harm. Verbal and written communication is required.

Additional Requirements : May require the use of personal or company vehicles on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Use of a personal vehicle for company business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a company vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Acceptable Experience and Training :

  • One year of experience in technical survey work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education / training that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Education :

High School diploma or vocational / technical training preferred.

Years of experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
