DIRECTOR LABOR RELATIONS

POSITION SUMMARY

As an integral part of the terminals leadership team, the Director, Labor Relations serves as the Terminal Labor Relations representative and is responsible for the planning, oversight, and execution of Labor Relations programs, policies, procedures and all collective bargaining agreements.

This position is a point of contact for all terminal labor relations matters. The Director, Labor Relations ensures positive labor-management relations and compliance with all Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).

This position also administers grievance procedures and provides direction and assistance with all other Terminal labor-related issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees management and interpretation of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) and supplements, oversees data analysis process, advises and partners with terminal management to implement overall labor policy and strategies.
  • Represent FMS on PMA Labor Committees or equivalent.
  • Develop strong working relationships with elected labor officials and advise FMS management on labor strategies.
  • Ensure contract compliance at all levels of labor management.
  • Promotes a collaborative and team first work environment.
  • Champions safety and is actively engaged with the terminals Safety Program.
  • Maintains a climate that attracts, retains and motivates top quality personnel.
  • Recruits, trains, appraises, supervises, supports, develops, promotes and guides qualified personnel.
  • Cultivates a culture of focused, hard work and openness while recognizing and rewarding exceptional performance in line with Company policies.
  • Manages select projects end-to-end from problem analysis to solution identification and implementation.
  • Weekend, Holiday and Night coverage as required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associates or bachelors degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of related union contracts with extensive experience managing labor.
  • Personal knowledge of PMA work procedures and compliance activities.
  • Acquainted with Area Sub-Steering Committee and Coast Sub-Steering Committee, preferred PMA board level understandings.
  • Ten (10) or more years of related experience with terminal operations, labor management and contract compliance. Ability to negotiate agreements and / or reach consensus with diverse Labor groups.

Experience in drafting and writing contracts and contract language.

  • Direct involvement with ILWU labor workforce including but not limited to MEBA, OCU, OCS, Local 13, Local 63, Local 94, MFOW or equivalent.
  • Strong communicator in group settings and one-on-one interactions with the ability to resolve conflicts and gain cooperation among competing interest groups.

Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer.
