Laboratory Coordinator II Posting Number req19502 Department Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Department Website Link Location Main Campus Address Tucson, AZ USA Position Highlights We seek a self-starting, responsible, and creative science project coordinator to help coordinate laboratory and field research activities.

The focus is on supporting lab activities of the Saleska research group and collaborators at international sites, primarily the Amazon forests of South America, in Brazil.

Based at the University of Arizona, this position will support : (1) organizing (and implementing, as needed) research and meetings, (2) administration and communication with Brazilian colleagues, students, and agency officials, and (3) international travel, especially to Brazil.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support laboratory and field activities, including sample measurement / collection, laboratory extractions, and subsequent analysis in coordination with lab members.
  • Travel to Amazon institutions and field sites to help coordinate and assist in activities. This includes assisting in fieldwork in tropical sites in an outdoor environment.
  • Field and lab work may include exposure to extreme heat and potential hazards typical of field or lab work, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals in a work setting.
  • Maintain transparent protocols for field safety and inclusive training, research and authorship to equitably sustain a diverse international collaboration.
  • Assist in securing appropriate authorization from international government agencies for research, travel, and training activities.

The employee will be given training on these established protocols set by the Brazilian government and will be responsible for collecting needed documents.

Help coordinate with international counterparts (especially in Brazil) in the organization of field research and training activities.

Complete appropriate paperwork for the departmental business office to comply with University of Arizona and project policies in support of PI and lab actives.

Example : collecting documentation for purchases, reimbursements, and participant travel as needed.

Provide support to the Principal Investigator as needed, including :

Assisting in coordination of activities across lab members and external collaborators.

Assisting in the development of proposals to funding agencies.

Assisting in preparation of reports to funding agencies.

Making recommendations and implementing purchases for laboratory and field campaigns.

Generally evaluating and resolving problems within scope of position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or project management.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in a technical background related to laboratory and / or field science
  • Experience in managing / coordination
  • Fluency in written and spoken Portuguese

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess a master’s degree in a relevant area.
  • Educational background in science, engineering, or project management.
  • Experience working in Brazil.
  • Interest / experience in team-based interdisciplinary science and in helping to promote / sustain a diverse, equitable and inclusive research and training environment.
