Job Summary
A Research Technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Stephanie Hurwitz, MD, PhD. The Hurwitz lab focuses on understanding mechanisms that guide hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) homing and egress to and from the bone marrow.
In particular, the lab is interested in the roles of nano-sized, secreted extracellular vesicles in mediating cell-cell crosstalk between HSCs and bone marrow niche cells.
The overarching goal of the Hurwitz lab is to better understand and improve outcomes for patients undergoing HSC transplantation.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Performs a combination of in vitro and in vivo studies that involve mouse models, and human and mouse tissues and cell lines.
- Employs techniques including (but not limited to) mouse breeding and weaning, tissue culture, flow cytometry, western blotting, PCR, and confocal microscopy.
- Assists in lab ordering.
- Assists in regulatory procedures and protocols (ex. IACUC, IRB, chemical safety, radiation safety, and controlled substances).
- Serves as a resource to other laboratory personnel.
General Responsibilities
- Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results.
- Organizes analytical data of performed experiments. May submit findings for publication.
- Installs and maintains research equipment.
- Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training.
- Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management.
- Trains junior-level staff.
- Plans experiments and short-term goals.
- May require travel in order to service various research sites.

Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively.
The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

The ideal candidate for the research technician position in the Hurwitz lab is well-organized, detail-oriented, curious, and motivated.
Must be willing to work with mouse colonies. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to several projects resulting in co-authorship on papers.
