FUNCTION :
To assist in scheduling patients and to provide chair side assistance for the Dentist or dental hygienist
during examination and treatment of patients and perform clinical support functions essential for the operation of a dental clinic.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Assisting the Dentist or dental hygienist at chair side including performing direct, four-
handed assistance, oral evacuation and retraction, and the preparation of instruments and materials.
- Responsible for : seating, preparing and dismissing patients; assisting patients in the
- completion of medical history forms; all charting entries; operatory preparation, clean up and sanitization; routine maintenance of equipment;
and always maintaining adequate operatory supplies.
Responsible for : instrument sterilization and arrangement of pre-set trays, and control
of the flow of laboratory procedures.
- Processes and mounts dental radiographs.
- Provides patients with oral and written instructions for oral care following surgery or
other dental treatment procedures.
- Pours and trims study models.
- Responsible for duties assigned by the Dental Director, Dental Hygienist or Chief Nursing
- Responsible to the Dental Hygienist or Clinic Manager during absence of the Dental
- Prepares dental charts for audits as per Collaborative initiative.
- When opening the clinic in the morning, all lights should be turned on, all equipment
turned on (i.e. ultrasonic, developer, x-ray machines, autoclave emptied or packed and ran from the previous night,etc.)
The primary job is to assist the dentist. If the dentist is not in or is having a lot of
downtime, the DA will automatically assist the hygienist (charting,, seating patients, sterilization, cleaning operatories, etc.
If the hygienist has downtime, they will do these services themselves.
If the dentist or hygienist does not need assistance, the DA will assist the front desk with filing, calling patients or pulling charts.
This is only done if the front desk is running behind and the DA does not have maintenance to do to the equipment.
- All dental equipment will get weekly, monthly, etc. maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer. A logbook will keep all this information.
- At the end of the day, all equipment will be turned off, all instruments sterilized and put away, if there is time and all areas cleaned.
Trays for the next business day will be made. This ensures anyone can get started in the morning, even if the whole staff is not
If WinMed is short staffed at another site, the DA will fill in as needed or instructed by Dental Director.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS :
- Must be a High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Must have CPR and First-Aid training.
- Must have knowledge of routine clerical duties.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience.
- A dental assisting certificate is desirable.
- Hepatitis vaccine, required for dental services in State of Ohio.
- Must have good oral communication skills.
- Current assistant radiographer’s license is desirable.
- Must be willing to be cross trained per Collaborative requirements.
