This position will work closely with the General Counsel to roll-out and manage compliance oversight over heavily regulated business operations.

The Assistant General Counsel will also support the legal function by drafting and reviewing contracts and providing legal operations support to ensure that the legal department is operating efficiently, reliably, and in a well-organized manner.

This position will be an excellent opportunity to work closely with the entire breadth of a complex operating company and to demonstrate and develop a broad set of legal skills and grow in-house legal skills in an industry-leading company.

Duties and Responsibilities

Compliance : Roll-out and manage Corporate Compliance Program. Work closely with individuals throughout the organization who have responsibility over compliance functions to understand the various compliance functions of the organization.

With support from the General Counsel, develop a cohesive compliance program that protects against compliance violations, reduces risk, and results in improved operations and company value.

Serve as key member of the compliance committee and organization. Ensure company-wide compliance materials are maintained in a complete, accurate, and organized manner.

Assist in the drafting and maintenance of compliance related policies and procedures.

  • Core Legal : Support core legal functions of the company including contract review, drafting, and negotiation, HR / employment law support, and other legal projects as assigned.
  • Legal Operations : Work with General Counsel to recommend and advance legal operations projects to ensure an efficient and effective legal department.

This will include development of legal processes, protocols, and policies. Evaluate, recommend, and implement legal technologies, potentially including compliance software, contract life management systems, and e-billing technology.

  • Support General Counsel on other matters as requested.
  • Duties and responsibilities are expected to evolve with company needs, execution and / or implementation of previous projects, and growth of the individual in the role.
  • In order to be successful in this job, the individual in this position will need to depend on, work closely with, and partner with a number of stakeholders, including all compliance functions in the company (Operations, Logistics, HR, Food Safety / Quality, Safety, Medical, Claims, and IT);

and, as a key member of the legal department, the individual in this position will be required to provide client level service in a collaborative, pragmatic, customer service-oriented manner to all functional areas of the company

Competencies / Skills Required

  • Detail and process-oriented experience with legal / regulatory compliance required.
  • Significant experience implementing and managing compliance programs required. Outside legal advice, internal compliance management, or a combination of internal and external work acceptable.
  • Legal operations experience including use and implementation of legal technology required.
  • Strong writing and communication required.
  • In-house legal experience in relevant areas strongly valued.
  • Project and change management experience strongly valued.
  • Must be able to prioritize projects and meet critical deadlines.
  • Must have a desire, and ability to work in fast-paced, varied, operationally oriented environment.
  • Experience in fishing and / or maritime related industries valued but not required.

Education / Experience Required

  • Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington State or eligible and willing to seek prompt admission to practice in Washington.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of relevant experience in a combination of compliance, commercial contracts, and legal operations.

Work Schedule

  • Anticipated hours are Monday Friday 8 : 00am 5 : 00pm
  • Flexible work location (work from home) optional Mondays and Fridays.
  • Extended hours and weekend work will be required to respond to critical and / or time sensitive matters.
  • Limited travel may be required.

Salary Range : $136,000 $195,000 / DOE
