Job Summary
This position is responsible for managing the Company's property tax and gross receipts tax compliance functions and related accounting associated with the many jurisdictions in which the Company operates.
Additionally, this role supports supply chain, retail, and other facility growth and expansionary activities by identifying and obtaining statutory and discretionary incentives and ensuring compliance with related reporting requirements to maximize return on those investments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)
Review location budgets maintained in external vendor’s property tax system to ensure real and personal property tax accounting accruals are correctly calculated and up-to-date based on the latest property tax information available.
Perform audits to validate all bills have been obtained and ensure payments are timely processed through Anybill.
Review monthly income statement and balance sheet activity, prepared journal entries, and related reconciliations for property and gross receipts tax general ledger accounts for completeness and accuracy;
identifies unusual trends or variances and provides explanations for significant variances to finance and accounting departments.
Work closely with internal business stakeholders to identify opportunities where incentives may be available to support expansionary activities by reducing capital and operating costs;
pursues, obtains, and monitors incentives and ensures Company maintains compliance with any reporting obligations.
- Review gross receipts-based tax return calculations and authorizes payment; oversees outsourced gross receipts-based business license process to ensure Company remains in proper compliance in various jurisdictions.
- Coordinates with property tax compliance vendor to ensure annual personal property tax renditions are completed, accurately and timely filed, and in compliance with tax jurisdictions.
- Annually compiles and / or reviews budgets for property and gross receipts tax general ledger accounts, considering factors such as future new stores openings, abatements, and periodic annual reassessments and provides the budgets to Finance and property tax consultants.
- Responds to inquiries from internal and external auditors. Reviews audit findings and implements any necessary changes to tax process.
- Explore and evaluate tax reduction opportunities and implement new strategies and processes to obtain. This includes ensuring that properties are being timely reviewed and appealed by property tax consultants.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop the team.
Required Qualifications
Experience : 5 years of related experience. At least 2 years of experience in a financial or accounting role.
Education : Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or related field is required. Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Professional Certifications : CPA and / or CMI certification preferred.
Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities
- Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Ability to process, reconcile, and analyze electronic data.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office, including advanced skills in Excel.
- Experience with Alteryx / Knime preferred.
- Experience with Power BI or other data visualization tool preferred.
- Experience with Systems, Applications, and Product (SAP) and Business Objects data management software is preferred.
- Ability to research, audit, and analyze.
- Ability to interact and partner with professionals in various functional areas to resolve complex tax issues throughout Tractor Supply Company.
- Ability to represent Tractor Supply Company with external auditors and consultants.
