Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Child Development Center Toddler Teacher for the Psychology Child Development Center within the School of Arts & Sciences.

This position is one of ten permanent positions at the Rutgers Psychology Child Development Center, a teaching and research setting which provides early childhood care / education for 68 children from the ages of 1 to 5 years.

The Child Development Center Toddlers Teacher is responsible for specific classroom duties, for supervising children, staff and college fieldwork students, is required to participate in professional development, and is expected to have positive interactions with all parents and staff.

Among the key duties of this position are the following :

  • Oversees the classroom.
  • Provides meaningful interactions with parents.
  • Participates in programs providing professional development.
  • Supervises classroom aides, interns, volunteers, and fieldwork students.

Position Status Full Time Hours Per Week Daily Work Shift Day Work Arrangement Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.

3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.

3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date.

  • Bachelor’s degree in child development, elementary education, early childhood education, or related field; or In lieu of Bachelor’s degree in child development or related field, will also consider a candidate holding a Child Development Associate’s degree (CDA).
  • 2 years’ experience in an acceptable preschool situation.

Certifications / Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Applicant will be working with children under the age of 2.5 years and must provide evidence of training specific to the Infant and Toddler age group.
  • Must enjoy working with children and be able to demonstrate patience and respect while employing appropriate strategies to effectively care and educate young children.
  • Must be knowledgeable in Developmentally Appropriate Practice and implementation of these practices.
  • Must be able to relate to adults on all levels of the socioeconomic structure of the community in a positive and professional manner.
  • Must be in excellent health.
  • Must be agile enough to perform job functions as a teacher of young children.
  • Must be willing to continually increase knowledge in field of endeavor.
  • Daily and overnight travel may be required to participate in professional development training.
  • Must be patient and gentle with children and must demonstrate patience and tolerance for adults and college students who depend on the applicant to be a role model.

  • maintain any and all current childcare and Group Teacher requirements as specified in the Manual of Requirements for Child Care Centers and maintain these eligibility records in the NJ Workforce
  • Registry.
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid / CPR Certification for adults and children.
  • In accordance with state mandated requirements, a Mantoux test to verify the absence of
  • tuberculosis.
  • In accordance with state mandated requirements, inoculation against Hepatitis B, unless waived in writing by the successful candidate.
  • In accordance with NJ State law, applicants must agree to undergo, and authorize the University to conduct fingerprint, criminal history and / or child abuse record checks with various law enforcement agencies, including but not limited to : the FBI, Identification Division and / or The New Jersey Division of State Police Bureau of Identification.
  • Applicants must also assume any costs incurred by the University associated with the background investigations whether required by statute or not.
  • In accordance with University policy, applicants must successfully complete the University’s Working with Minors training.

Preferred Qualifications

Current New Jersey state elementary teacher’s license with preschool / nursery endorsement

  • CDA (Child Development Associate) training.

  • Documented formal training and experience with implementing ECERS and ITERS.
  • Documented formal training and experience with administering ASQ developmental ratings.
  • Continuous teaching experience in preschool classroom.
  • Preschool classroom teaching experience within past 3 years.
  • Current membership with NAEYC.
  • Current membership with NJ Workforce Registry.
  • Candidates with a teaching portfolio.

Equipment Utilized

Procare Software; Creative Curriculum Online, Tadpoles, and GOLD; data entry via iPad / Tablet; Microsoft Office Suite of programs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be physically able to handle the duties encountered by a daycare worker : lifting children onto diapering table, chasing after them in the playground, sitting down on the floor / getting up from the floor for extended periods of time throughout the day to engage with children.
  • Must be able to lift and carry children and equipment, and may spend time sitting on the floor or in child-sized furniture, etc.
  • Must be in good mental health-dealing with children and families is sometimes stressful and the applicant must be able to remain calm and collected in high-pressure situations.
  • Will be expected to change diapers and assist in toilet training of young children.
  • Will be expected to clean and maintain equipment and facility, and may move throughout the community with the children.
  • Will be expected to participate in outdoor activities daily, in all types of weather.
  • May come into contact with children who are ill and / or contagious, and must take precautions to ensure health and safety of all children, parents, staff, and themselves.
  • Will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment where a number of activities and situations are happening at once.
  • Must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.
  • May experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill.
  • Must be in excellent health. Caring for children can be stressful and physically demanding.
  • Must be detail-oriented when recording daily experience details and information for parents and when assisting fieldwork students with questions and concerns.
  • Must be available to travel and attend professional development conferences in- and out-of-state, daily and / or overnight.
