Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery is seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate, specializing in Human-Artificial Intelligence Interaction.
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to novel research at the intersection of human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and healthcare delivery.
The successful candidate will collaborate on projects aimed at evaluating AI tools in clinical practice and advancing human-centered AI research to inform AI implementation and policy.
The candidate will be primarily mentored by Dr. Barbara Barry of the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.
Kern Center has nearly 200 staff members of whom 23 are PhD faculty, working on over 140 active projects in collaboration with over 120 practice partners across all Mayo Clinic sites.
The candidate will be co-mentored by Dr. Xuan Zhu, also of the Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery. The candidate will be closely working with Drs.
Barry and Zhu on research projects and new methods for studying the emerging challenges of AI in healthcare, including technology adoption, trust, and patient-clinician communication.
There will be opportunities to collaborate and learn in projects that benefit patients and contribute to the broader community of scientists pursuing the effective and ethical use of AI in health care.
Qualified candidates are expected to have PhD in computer science, focusing on human-computer interaction and AI, or a related field with a strong background in mixed methods for assessing the psychological, behavioral, and implementation impacts of AI technologies on users.
The preferred candidate will have the following skills and expertise :
Required
- PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, or a related field
- Strong background in mixed methods research for assessing the social, behavioral, and practical impacts of AI technologies in healthcare
- Experience with focus group and ethnographic interview design, facilitation, and analysis.
- Experience with survey design and data analysis
- Familiarity with the history and current applications of Information Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in medicine
- Research activity related to publications, conference presentations, or grant applications in Human-AI Interaction
Optional
- Experience leading or contributing to systematic literature reviews.
- Proficiency in analyzing electronic health record data.
- Familiarity with ethnographic observation for contextual inquiry.

A Research Associate at Mayo Clinic is a temporary transitional role with the primary purpose to allow qualified individuals to work within an established investigator's program in preparation for an academic and / or independent research career.
The ability to perform specialized or complex functions would typically be demonstrated through review of scientific accomplishments, contributions, and peer-reviewed publications averaging at least one per year post doctoral degree.
The Research Associate is expected to provide leadership support and training within an established research program. Upon background check and CCATS Executive Committee approval, Research Associate may have patient / research subject contact directly relating to and incidental to the original research program. "
