The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is accepting applications to fill a hybrid Paralegal / Investigator position in our Affirmative Civil Enforcement section.

The successful candidate will assist in investigating and litigating interesting, important cases in which the OAG is asserting claims on behalf of the state.

The section litigates a wide range of plaintiff-oriented cases such as false claims, breach of contract, illegal annexations, enforcement actions on behalf of the State of Kansas, representing state agencies in administrative disciplinary / licensing matters, ensuring Kansas’ compliance with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), and pursuing judgments on behalf of the state.

The successful candidate will assist in investigating and litigating such cases in a team environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Review documents and interview potential witnesses in relation to pursuing civil or administrative enforcement matters on behalf of the State.
  • Calendaring / Scheduling for multiple Assistant Attorneys General
  • Review, organize, and maintain case materials
  • Draft pleadings, subpoenas, discovery and correspondence
  • Assist in deposition and trial preparation
  • Provide assistance at trials, including document / exhibit management, witness coordination, and other duties as needed
  • Process daily incoming and outgoing correspondence for the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Section through mail, email and fax
  • Input and maintain data in the electronic document and case management systems
  • Responsibility for various administrative functions including accurate data entry, mailings, filing, proofreading, office supply maintenance, publication requests or other administrative assignments as needed

TRAVEL

The primary work location for this position is at 120 SW 10th Street, Topeka, Kansas. Occasional in-state travel may be required.

A valid driver’s license is required when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or comparable paralegal certification OR bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.

Seven years of cumulative experience as an investigator, paralegal, forensic accountant, financial analyst, or similar may be substituted for education / certification requirement.

  • At least three years of work experience as an investigator, paralegal, or accountant / financial analyst
  • Must have great time-management skills, and organizational skills
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with an electronic case management system
  • Experience with accounting, financial investigations, debt collection, or similar activities

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference / background check of past and present employers.

The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.

In this position, you would be authorized access to private information to the extent necessary to perform the assigned duties.

Employees of the OAG are required to protect against unauthorized access to such information, ensure the security and privacy of such information, and disclose any anticipated threats or hazards to such information.

Employees must be cautious not to release this information to the public or other individuals, including but not limited to OAG employees who have not been authorized or who do not have a legitimate organizational, departmental, or business need to know.
