SALARY RANGE : $ 41,485.00- $45,700.00 Annually

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION : Applicant’s education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency.

ELIGIBILITY : Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK : Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.

PROBATION : All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

A Small Engine Mechanic II provides work direction to lower-level employees and participates in a wide range of maintenance and repair work on gasoline and diesel driven engines that power equipment such as reel and rotary mowers, tractors, chain saws, compressors, and chippers.

The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive general supervision from an administrative superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek.

Work is performed in repair shops where the employee may be exposed to seasonal extremes of weather, sharp blades and dirty and greasy shop conditions.

Work requires moderate physical exertion in lifting and moving heavy machine parts and equipment.

SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must :

EDUCATION : Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certification.

EXPERIENCE : Havethree (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline ordiesel-powered engines and related equipment.

EQUIVALENCIES : Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES :

Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.

Possession of a City driver's license is required within one year of employment.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the operating principles and assemblage of gasoline and diesel-powered engines.

Knowledge of the functions of equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Knowledge of the practices, techniques and materials used in equipment maintenance and repair.

Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures pertaining to equipment repair and shop maintenance.

Skill in the use of hand tools.

Skill in the disassembly, repair and reconditioning of a wide variety of gasoline and diesel-powered engines.

Skill in the repair and overhaul of such equipment as lawn mowers, pumps, chain saws, chippers, tractors, motors and lawn sprinkler systems.

Ability to diagnose operating problems of engines and related component parts.

Ability to operate grinding machines.

Ability to maintain records.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
