Primary Role :
The Director of Special Programs will provide leadership for the district's special education / 504 program to ensure provision of needed services for special needs students.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in education or educational administration
- Teacher Certification and Three + years teaching experience in special education
- Understanding of federal, state and local requirements associated with special education services
- Experience in supervision or program coordination
- Experience in creating and providing large group professional development
Special Knowledge and Skills :
- Ability to foster positive relationships with staff and families and facilitate conflict resolution strategies
- Proven strengths in organization, time management, attention to detail and program coordination
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to provide guidance to principals, teachers, diagnosticians, and other service providers
- Proficiency with educational software, including special education documentation
- Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and / or professional literature
Major Responsibilities and Duties :
- Oversee PK-12 special education compliance with federal, state and local requirements
- Guide PK-12 campus administrators in implementation of high quality programs for students with disabilities
- Lead Child Find processes, including protocols for documentation and evaluation
- Provide and oversee required training to special education and general education teachers to support compliance and effective, research based instruction to students with disabilities
- Supervise PK-12 speech & related service providers
- Oversee ARD process and ensure transfer of student records is timely and that initial schedule of services aligns with the IEPs
- Implement school-wide process of progress monitoring for students with disabilities
- Represent NYOS in state and regional Director meetings and additional trainings to maintain high level of knowledge regarding compliance and all applicable rules and regulations
- Disseminate updates and legal information to campus administrators and provide guidance in implementation
- Oversee special education recordkeeping and comply with local, state and federal guidelines.
- Lead annual district Self-Assessment, including the collection of evidence, submit and certify data required for reporting
- Assist with parent education regarding special education services including transition services
- Collaborate with district leaders to identify program needs and to establish spending priorities that meet the objectives of the Special Education program
- Guide any collaborative activities that require legal consultation specific to special education services
Compensation and Benefits
