Position description

Joint UCD / VA Academic General Thoracic Surgeon

The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis Health located in Sacramento, California, and the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), jointly seek to hire a full time Thoracic Surgeon in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the assistant professor level, in the Health Science Clinical Professor, Clinical X, or In-Residence series.

This is a 75% clinical appointment at the VA and 25% appointment at UC Davis Health, a level I Trauma Center and tertiary care referral center.

The Division of General Thoracic Surgery, at UC Davis Health, is a national leading, comprehensive academic program including an integrated residency in thoracic surgery, basic and clinical research, an active clinical service, and affiliations with the Veterans Administration hospital in Sacramento, California.

VANCHCS expectations include maintenance of a high degree of excellence in clinical outcomes while providing efficient patient care.

Collaborative patient management along with the other departments and sections of the hospitals including, but not limited to, Vascular laboratory, Medicine, Radiology, Medical Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, Gastroenterology, and the auxiliary services.

The selected candidate will contribute to the growth of the educational, research and clinical missions of the surgical programs at UC Davis Health.

Expected responsibilities include teaching, inpatient and outpatient clinical care, and research relating to thoracic disease, with a specific focus on lung cancer, and quality improvement.

Clinical duties include resident / fellow supervision, call coverage at both the UC Davis Medical Center and the VA facilities.

Ready access to hybrid O.R.s, robotic surgical systems and Simulation Centers will be available. The selected candidate will work collaboratively and integrate with our partners.

This position will receive separate additional compensation from the VA for their portion of the appointment.

Basic qualifications

  • Must possess a Medical Degree
  • Be eligible or certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
  • The candidate should have a strong interest and expertise in thoracic oncology, minimally invasive thoracic surgery (VATS and / or Robotics robotics preferred but not required ) and esophageal surgery
  • The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially and promote a diverse and inclusive environment
