Job Summary

Basic Function :

The Department of Biobehavioral Sciences at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking applications for a full time Lecturer for the Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Primary responsibilities associated with the position include teaching clinical courses in the master’s program during Fall and Spring semesters.

Additional responsibilities will include coordination of external placements for graduate clinicians, student advisement, contributions to program administration, or clinical supervision, as needed.

More specifically, as the Externship Placement Coordinator, the candidate will work with the CSD Program Director, the EDMCCD Director, clinical and academic faculty to collaborate with the field to arrange, manage, and facilitate graduate students’ completion of externship training opportunities.

The individual assists in interfacing with other service professionals at the college and in the field, assuring adherence to the highest standard of clinical practice.

The individual will assist in facilitating the coordination and implementation of academic knowledge within the clinical setting.

Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experiences and background. This is a 9-month position paid over 12 months.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Teaching, Clinical Instruction, and Student Advising

  • Will teach five required didactic clinical courses each academic year.
  • Deliver clinical instruction to students in accordance with the CSD program curriculum and may have the opportunity for additional formal teaching responsibilities within the CSD program.
  • Reviewing and grading of student paperwork and assignments related to clinical preparation.
  • Provides written feedback on all forms of clinical documentation.
  • Provides specific feedback / instruction to graduate student clinicians to ensure the highest quality of care and use of evidence-based practices.
  • Advisement of students as it relates to clinical requirements and experiences.

Placement Coordination

  • Contact new sites for affiliations.
  • In collaboration with the Clinic Director, gathers and manages information on specific contacts and requirements for each site.
  • Meets with students to plan for, mentor during, and review externship experiences.
  • Collects and manages student information to propose externship assignments.
  • Creates, manages, and distributes training manuals, syllabi, and tracking systems for students and externship supervisors
  • Prepares students for consideration for externships (including review of resumes and cover letters).
  • In collaboration with Clinic Director, externship supervisors, and students, manages externship experience (email, telephone, and site visits).
  • Manages tracking of all student and externship supervisor paperwork, medical clearances and other HR paperwork.
  • Collects ASHA cards from externship supervisors.
  • Submits grades to the Registrar.
  • In collaboration with Clinic Director maintains communication and collegiality with externship sites.
  • In consideration of the additional responsibilities in coordination of external placements for graduate clinicians, two-course releases are granted.

Should these responsibilities transfer to a different position, the 5-course load would be required.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Candidates must doctoral degree in CSD and at least 3-5 years of clinical experience
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association
  • Licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist by New York State
  • Experience teaching in a CSD / SLP graduate program
  • 5-7 years’ experience as a practicing clinician in academic and / or clinical settings, with at least 1 year in a management position
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Strong Organizational, Leadership, and Management Skills
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Cultural responsiveness in working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications :

Previous experience teaching at graduate or undergraduate levels, with familiarity with online course

delivery systems and evidence of effectiveness preferred. Candidates can have expertise in speech,

language, and / or swallowing disorders in adults or children.

  • Course assignments will depend on the successful candidate’s area(s) of expertise.
  • Expertise in multilingual / multicultural contexts preferred.
  • Research experience preferred.
  • Bilingual / Multilingual preferred, but not required
  • Previous Experience supervising CSD students’ knowledge of HIPPA and FERPA requirements
  • Familiarity with ASHA accreditation and reporting requirements
  • Management training
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required in order to facilitate expanded clinical hours and student academic schedules.

Salary Range : $82,000 - $92,000
