QueensCare is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization originally founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Sacred Heart, whose mission of compassion and accessible healthcare continues today.

QueensCare provides screening, treatment, education, and preventive and direct care to Los Angeles area residents in need.

Beyond that, we also give charitable grants to other non-profits making a difference in the City of Angels and fund scholarships for those entering medical fields with an interest in working in underserved communities.

About the role

Under the direct supervision of the Mobile Programs Manager, the Optical Assistant will assist Optometrist in providing excellent patient care and support within a mobile unit.

Optical Assistant will assist in delivering comprehensive eye care services to patients at various locations, ensuring accessibility to quality care for the underserved populations.

This role requires a combination of technical expertise in optometry assistance and excellent patient care skills. Responsibilities include assisting with scheduling schools for eye exams, frame selection, submitting orders lens fitting, distribution of eyeglasses, and maintaining accurate patient records.

What you'll do

Optometry Support

  • Prepare patients for eye exams by documenting medical histories and performing preliminary tests (e.g. visual acuity).
  • Conduct basic diagnostic tests such as autorefraction, tonometry, visual field testing at various locations.
  • Process orders for eyeglasses.
  • Measure and dispenses spectacles, troubleshoots eyeglass problems, and provides follow-up services such as adjustments and repairs.
  • Contact various schools and partnered sites to arrange schedules, check on order status with laboratory, respond to any inquiries from parents, patients, and school.
  • Schedule appointments and manage patient records.
  • Complete patient’s charts in the electronic health record system, Revolution, following standard optometric practice guidelines and specific program requirements.
  • Maintain and calibrate optical equipment and tools.
  • Responsible for providing guidance on proper eyewear and usage.
  • Educate patients on carious eye health issues and preventative measures.
  • Handle and manage inventory of eyewear and tools.
  • Assist in setting up and dismantling mobile clinic equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of mobile unit.
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining the mobile clinic vehicle (if applicable), ensuring it is stocked and ready for services in the community.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Participate in outreach activities and community events to promote eye health awareness.
  • Collaborate with other programs and community organizations to provide links to services and enhance service delivery.
  • Must be willing and able to work all business hours including evenings and weekends to attend health fairs / events as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to work at all locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Utilize customer service skills to ensure patients feel comfortable during their appointments and are well-informed about their treatment and vision wellness.

Qualifications

EDUCATION :

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of Optician Program or equivalent work experience in related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE :

  • Proven experience in optometry or a related field, preferably in a clinical or mobile healthcare setting.
  • Experience working with adults, children, and families from diverse social, cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Valid California driver’s license with current automobile insurance.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Experience working with faith communities and demonstrates spiritual maturity.

KNOWLEDGE :

  • Knowledgeable of optical terminology, equipment, and procedures.
  • Promotion of process improvement.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications such as Zoom, Teams, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook, EHR, preferably Revolution.

SKILLS :

  • Works well with children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail to manage administrative tasks efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact compassionately with patients of diverse backgrounds.
  • Understands which decisions can be made alone and which decisions need to involve others.
  • Demonstrates a self-directed mature, disciplined, and tactful approach to fulfilling job duties.
  • Demonstrates ability and flexibility to work in other areas of the organization as needed.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written, preferably bilingual (Spanish- oral).

The pay range for this role is :

52,020.26 - 8,141.88 USD per year(QueensCare Corporate Headquarters)
