We have been provided additional staffing resource that we’re excited to use to develop a new designated social work role in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Wellington Regional Hospital to work with patients over the age of 16 years.

Wellington Regional Hospital ICU treats patients who are critically unwell with neurosurgical, trauma, vascular, general medical and surgical patients from the upper South Island and lower North Island.

These patients will have had either a serious life threatening accident or medical event. As most of these patients are sedated and incubated the majority of the social work role is working with the patient’s whānau.

The Social Worker will complete psycho social assessments utilising trauma informed practice and Te Whare Tapa Whā to support whānau at a very distressing time.

There are instances when the patient does not survive and Social Work will support whānau with the sudden loss of their loved one.

The role will work alongside the Neurology Social Worker and provide cover on the Neurological inpatient ward, particularly for patients who transfer from ICU to Neurology.

The Neurology and Neurosurgery ward cares for patients who have had a traumatic brain injury, stroke or any other diseases and disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

The role covers into other areas of the hospital as needed and will provide social work on Saturday’s across inpatient services on a roster basis about 3 - 4 times per year receiving penal pay rates.

We are a team of 23 social workers based at Wellington Hospital who provide a service to patients and their whānau across inpatient, outpatient and community settings.

We complete psycho social assessments across the age range and provide holistic social work interventions. This role is well supported by the other adult social workers in the team.

As the successful candidate you will have a passion for working in this area and be highly motivated to support patients and whānau navigate their health journey.

You will be able to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and with external agencies.

Working with a diverse group of patients with significant health needs the post holder will require excellent documentation, communication and time management skills.

The successful applicant will have the following skills and attributes :

  • NZ Registered Social Worker with current annual practising certificate
  • Minimum of 3 years social work practice
  • The ability to complete psycho social needs assessment
  • Navigating and working within the legal requirements of health care and social work
  • A clear understanding of the health needs of Māori and Pacific Island communities
  • Therapeutic social work counselling experience (desirable)
  • Previous work in a health setting and a good understanding of health social work (desirable)
