Job Summary
Under the direction of the HMM Technical Operations Supervisor, Principal Hazardous Materials Technicians serve as lead technicians for HMM and are responsible for performing all technician duties, assigning work schedules, and providing guidance to less experienced technicians.
A thorough understanding of the regulations governing hazardous waste transportation and disposal is required.
This is a 'critical' position; fingerprinting and a background check are required.

Please note : The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point.
An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) provides safety and compliance guidance to all UCSF operations and facilities, including activities across both the Campus and the Health System.
Under formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with both the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), EH&S Fire Prevention staff perform plan review, construction inspections, existing building inspections and other work on behalf of OSFM and OSHPD, providing reviews and code enforcement on behalf of the agencies.
Other EH&S staff provide expert consultation and other services related to bio-safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, workplace safety and ergonomics, industrial hygiene, environmental protection and spill response.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school or General Education Diploma (GED) and four years of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two years of college including appropriate science courses and three years of experience in an environmental health and safety program;
or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
- At least two years of experience managing hazardous waste
- DOT Hazmat employee training within the last 3 years
- Possession of a California Driver's license with a good driving record is required
- Strong working knowledge of chemical, radioactive, and biological hazards including best practices for handling hazardous substances.
Ability to assess hazards and determine proper storage and handling procedures
- Knowledge of the regulatory requirements governing storage, transportation, disposal, and recordkeeping for hazardous, radioactive, medical, and controlled substance waste
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills including use of computer for email, word processing, and recordkeeping
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs is required; wear appropriate personal protective clothing, including a full-face respirator;
position requires, pushing, pulling, bending stooping, twisting; Ability to work in areas with wide temperature ranges; Ability to work in laboratory and waste processing environments
