The Role

The News Service of Florida is looking to hire a reporter who can quickly step in and contribute to coverage of state government and politics.

In this role you will lead coverage of education issues involving public schools, state colleges and universities. You will also will write a wide range of other stories, including covering political issues.

Part of the year you will focus on covering the legislative session and legislative committee meetings. Throughout the year, you will be responsible for generating and executing story ideas.

You should have a minimum of two years of reporting experience and a background in generating a consistent flow of daily copy.

As a Staff Reporter, you will report directly to Jim Saunders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive coverage of both legislative and electoral politics
  • Develop story ideas based on leads or as assigned by conducting research, investigating and observing
  • Arrange and conduct interviews with elected officials and politicians
  • Create relationships with members of the local community and government agencies to develop access to credible sources for future stories
  • Meet all deadlines for projects as requested by editor

Qualifications

  • Have 2 years' reporting experience
  • Ability to write with speed, clarity, accuracy and freedom from bias
  • An ability to work under time pressure
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy for copy
  • Ability to produce daily content as needed
  • Interest and / or expertise in Florida state politics

The compensation range for this role is $45,000 to $50,000 per year.
