- GENERAL PURPOSE : Manages and maintains the Fort Concho Research Library and archival collections; provides historical research assistance to fort staff and the public;
- prepares various publications, handouts, materials, and brochures; provides assistance with special events and ongoing site programming;
and performs other related duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Oversees and provides for the maintenance and development of the Library's collection; conducts research; acquires archival and / or other collection items through purchase and donation.
- Organizes, catalogs, shelves, tracks, and preserves various types of collection materials including historical documents, books, newspapers, journals, maps, blueprints, photographs, artwork, and microfilm.
- Evaluates collection materials for re-assignment; reviews donations for addition to the Library's collection and archives.
- Assists fort and city staff and Library patrons in performing historical research and compiling / interpreting data.
- Creates and / or assists in the research, development, production, and installation of Fort Concho exhibits and public programs.
- Working with site manager, local / regional universities and other resources, interviews, selects, & manages interns and volunteers for ad-hoc projects and general internships.
- Provides assistance in coordinating and / or implementing Fort Concho special events as required.
- Designs, develops, and produces various types of Fort Concho publications and brochures.
- Participates in appropriate training and professional conferences.
- Writes and edits various site publications, newsletters, and other promotional materials.
- Provides assistance in promoting and publicizing Fort Concho's programs and special events.
- Assists staff and city contractor in ad creation and placement for events and programs.
- Conducts research and identifies grant opportunities; with site manager prepares grant applications / proposals.
- Works with site manager on annual reports and managing various city data bases.
- Maintains special mailing lists.
- Assists in troubleshooting and resolving minor computer issues.
- Prepared and makes talks / presentations to groups and special audiences as appropriate.
- Participates in site living history program as appropriate.
- Hours : Monday through Friday, 8 : 00 am to 5 : 00 pm., some nights and weekends required at prescheduled dates.
- Regular and timely attendance is required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education and Experience :
Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, History, or related field; AND three years experience managing and maintaining archival library collections and conducting historical research;
OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree is preferred.
Required Licenses or Certifications :
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
Required Knowledge of :
- Principles of collection management and development.
- Various types of materials relative to living history collections.
- Methods for preserving and maintaining archival materials.
- Historical research methods and techniques.
- Marketing and public relations principles.
- Customer service standards and protocol.
Required Skill in :
- Overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of the Fort Concho Research Library.
- Organizing, cataloging, developing, and maintaining the Library's archival collection.
- Providing research assistance to Library patrons and employees.
- Effective research, editing, writing, and verbal communication.
- Designing and producing various types of publications, brochures, and / or other marketing materials
- Assisting with special events and the installation of exhibits.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other staff, volunteers, City departments, outside agencies, vendors, and the general public.
Physical Demands / Work Environment :
- Work is performed in an archival library environment.
- Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing stairs, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to variable weather conditions is involved when assisting with special events.
