SUMMARY :

The Research Chemist is primarily responsible for advancing the research goals of Technology Development in areas of raw materials, process improvements and new technologies through lab scale evaluation and plant adoption efforts.

A strong grasp of scientific aspects of wallboard (or the science underpinning previous experience) and analytical rigor is expected as is coming up with incremental ideas based on existing data.

She / he must be a team-player and work collaboratively with several teams to provide outcomes in a reasonable time frame.

An important part of this role is to train new employees in TIC on the art of making and testing wallboards. Meticulousness, curiosity, attention to detail, and adherence to safety standards are also required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (not all inclusive) :

  • Ability to design lab evaluation protocols and follow up with detailed reports providing additional research directions and / or recommendations
  • Plan and assist in plant trials and or field tests as required during product development, raw material development, or process development projects.
  • Work with vendors to develop and qualify new raw materials for cost reduction / quality improvement.
  • Evaluate plant production for conformance to specifications and suitability for gypsum board manufacture and / or manufacture of specialty board products.
  • Support lab technicians including training, and coordination of activities in support of physical property testing, product support / improvement and new product development efforts.
  • Support purchasing by managing the development and qualification of new raw materials and new vendors for existing raw material
  • Work with purchasing, manufacturing, and suppliers to develop and qualify new materials for cost reductions, quality improvements, or added features and benefits as assigned.
  • Contribute to a safe, injury-free work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related physical science.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a laboratory environment, laboratory testing, product improvement, and product development.
  • Strong commitment to safety, and the ability to maintain an orderly and safe workplace.
  • Basic understanding of products / processes and relevant materials is essential.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication, with an understanding of planning and work organization.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time. This would include both air and automobile travel.
  • Ability to consistently work in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation with all internal as well as external constituents.
  • Physical ability to access all plant areas.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Hybrid work schedule ineligible.
