CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

Employees in this classification are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, and EMS activities.

Firefighters are responsible for administering rescue, first aid, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation services as well as providing prompt paramedical attention at the emergency scene for purposes of managing and stabilizing the critically ill and injured.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs fire suppression as a team member and / or individually by manning hose lines, operating hand-held fire suppression equipment, and carrying out related duties in emergency firefighting situations.
  • Providesemergency medical services on persons injured or ill according to national, state and departmental guidelines for paramedics.
  • Performs rescue and extrication functions on victims from occupancies filled with heat, smoke, and toxic gases by entering occupancy and physically removing victims as well as on victims involved in vehicular entrapments using specific hand and power equipment.
  • Performs salvage and clean-up functions as required at the conclusion of fire-related emergency scenes.
  • Maintains physical conditioning and physical stamina required to perform firefighting duties.
  • Conductsroutine inspections of personal safety equipment to ensure equipment is in optimum condition and promptly notifies superiors of any deficiencies.
  • Attends classroom and drill ground training sessions in order to continuously update knowledge and skills required for effective work performance.
  • Communicates and interacts with co-workers and / or the public either collectively or on a person-to-person level to receive emergency instructions or relay emergency information.
  • Participates in public education activities such as school demonstrations, safety workshops, etc., while serving as a public safety provider within the community.
  • Performs janitorial and domestic duties in fire stations to ensure a clean and orderly work / living environment is maintained.
  • Assists in training volunteers in firefighting skills and basic life support.
  • Drives fire apparatus and operates pumps.
  • Conducts pre-fire inspections of businesses.
  • Completes fire and medical reports and assists with maintaining departmental asset inventories.
  • Assumes initial command of fire and medical incidents as directed.
  • Serves on Village and other department committees and boards as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma / GED.
  • Mustbe 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid State of Florida Firefighter II certification.
  • Valid State of Florida Paramedic certification.
  • Valid AHA certification as an ACLS Provider, BLS Provider and PALS Provider.
  • Successful completion of an EVO (Emergency Vehicle Operators) course.
  • Passed the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) preferably within six (6) months prior to application closing date.
  • Successful completion of the NAEMT’s Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course or equivalent certified coursework.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials, rope rescue and vehicle extrication.
  • Ability to perform skilled technical firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; in basic and advanced life support and emergency medical services;

and in rescue activities.

  • Ability to inspect and furnish line maintenance to all department fire and medical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to understand and follow oral as well as written instructions.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to meet and maintain departmental requirements regarding health, physical and mental conditions as established by the Fire Rescue Department and approved by Village administration.
  • Valid Florida driver license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to : remain stationary;
  • position self close to ground; traverse to and from multiple areas and facilities; bend; sit; use hands to finger, handle, touch or feel;

reach with hands and arms; exchange information efficiently and effectively in fast-paced, loud environment; and smell. The employee is occasionally required to push, pull, kneel, crouch, crawl, or swim.

The employee must regularly lift and / or carry moderately heavy objects (20-50 pounds) and intermittently lift, carry, push and / or pull heavier objects (100+ pounds).

Specific vision abilities required for this job include near vision, mid-range vision, field of vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and unpleasant environmental elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather and loud noise.

Tasks involve working in and around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts and associated material handling areas, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions contribute to the prevention of injuries / accidents.
