Summary
The Pharmacy Assistant performs pharmacy functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. Duties include but are not limited to : Pharmacist support including answering phones and processing medication demands, filling patient specific medication, Cleanroom / IV support including compliance with USP Chapter 797 and 800 procedures, filling and maintaining the Pyxis MedStations, filling floor stock orders, filling and replacement of emergency kits, medication packaging, inventory management, performing various computer functions relating to billing, printing labels and reports and maintaining regulatory standards
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following :
- Performs all tasks according to policy and procedure.
- Compliance with all elements of the Pharmacy Assistant training tool.
- Integrates customer service into work practice.
- Preform work flow that maintain regulatory compliance of the department.
- Utilizes current hospital requirements for infection control.
- Participates in Performance Improvement Initiatives.
- Utilizes appropriate steps in the decision making process to include recognition and priority setting related to pharmacy work flow issues.
- Collaborates and communicates with the health care team.
- Completes competency requirements.
- Attends mandatory in-services.
- Attends staff meetings as required / requested.
- Utilizes cost containment practices.
- Adheres to all WPH policies and procedures including dress code, code of conduct, customer service, attendance and submission of annual physical.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
- High school diploma / equivalency
- Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board PTCB).
- Maintain the continuing education requirements established by the certifying board

Physical / Mental Demands / Requirements & Work Environment
Must be physically able to move, remove and transport heavy objects up to 50 lbs. Must frequently perform difficult manipulative, arm hand steadiness and hand eye coordination skills;
Must be physically able to ambulate or be stationary for extended periods of time.
Must have the ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time.
Individual must be able to understand theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given during the course of a day.
Must be physically able to meet all regulatory requirements. Sees objects closely and far away and hears normal sounds with some background noises.
May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools / SDS Access).
A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
