Clinical Laboratory Technologist
Overview
Perform and report results on a variety of analytical tests and procedures of patient specimen samples according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates knowledge and perform tests in at least three of the five subspecialties : chemistry, hematology, microbiology, diagnostic immunology, and / or blood bank.
- Coordinates multiple tasks with precision and flexibility, provides accurate precise test results within the minimum turnaround time establish for the laboratory.
- Operates various laboratory instruments involved in specimen testing and result reporting including performing all required quality control tests per shift or necessary.
- Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Adheres to IMC’s infection control policies : reports any spillage / contamination to manager.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies the lead laboratory technologist.
- Follow the laboratory’s established corrective action policy and procedure, whenever test system is not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
- Adheres and complies with hospital and laboratory infection control policies and procedures.
- Actively participates in ongoing testing with the standards of accrediting agencies. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples were tested in the same manner as a patient specimen sample.
- Participate in the laboratory’s quality assurance and improvement program.
- Documents all quality control activities, instrument procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Performs required maintenance of equipment and performs troubleshooting procedures necessary to correct situation.
- Prepare reports assigned by the supervisor of manager.
- Train students when necessary.
- Check inventory levels to maintain stock when needed.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Qualifications
Education :
Bachelor’s Degree in clinical laboratory science required.
Experience :
No experience required but must possess license.
Knowledge and Skills :
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
- Works cooperatively within department and other departments.
- Basic computer skills, and proficiency.
- Ability to adapt to changing conditions in a calm, productive, and flexible manner.
Licenses, Certifications :
- New York State licensure required.
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements :
- Involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing and bending.
- May include some repetitive motions.
