Job Description

Summary : The Assistant Director for Student Accessibility Services assists in coordinating ADA accommodations for Queens students, with an emphasis on NCAA student-athletes managing temporary or permanent disabilities.

This is a full-time position within the Center for Student Success reporting to the Director of Student Accessibility Services and working directly with the Director of Athletic Academic Success.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include

  • Reviews and manages accommodation requests in conjunction with the Director of Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
  • Works with Athletics to support student-athletes who have experienced injuries and other medical events (e.g., concussions and surgical procedures).
  • Coordinates accommodations for temporary disabilities including working with faculty, Residence Life, and the Registrar’s Office for classroom relocations.
  • Conducts student intake meetings, check-ins, and outreach to students of concern; assists students with understanding the accommodation process and building self-advocacy skills.
  • Assists with the administration of accommodated testing through SAS, including managing student workers.
  • Works collaboratively with the other members of the Center for Student Success and makes referrals to other campus support services as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with other campus departments to educate students, faculty, and staff about the accommodations process and promote an inclusive campus environment for all students.
  • Remains knowledgeable of best practices regarding disability services and accommodation in higher education.
  • Appropriately handles, tracks, and stores sensitive & confidential materials according to established guidelines by understanding the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Assists with implementation and organization of other accommodations (Braille, smart pens, book share, etc.)

Non-Essential Duties

Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

  • Experience working with student-athletes and / or diverse undergraduate student populations, such as students receiving accommodations, international students, ethnic or racial minority students, financially fragile students, or first-generation college students.
  • Proficiency with web-based applications; Microsoft Office (particularly spreadsheet, database, and word processing); and student information systems with a strong orientation to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish rapport with the diversity of our students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills, including proven expertise in follow-up and follow-through to completion within established time frames.
  • A high level of personal integrity and professionalism.
  • Strong work ethic and initiative.
  • Ability to problem solve and research solutions, as needed.
  • Ability to quickly learn and assimilate into new systems and cultures.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Strong collaboration skills across the department and campus to promote a positive work environment.
  • Master's degree in higher education, counseling, college student personnel or a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and significant work experience.
