The Animal Care Supervisor will be a team player who is willing to learn on the job and collaborate with coworkers and other departments at the facility.

The Supervisor will work to ensure the highest quality of husbandry and care as well as provide oversight, training, and guidance to the animal care technicians.

Efficient and effective communication skills with co-workers, the management team, PI’s, research staff, students, and other support services is also required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Supervises the daily operation of one large animal care facility or multiple small facilities.

Assists investigative and veterinary staff.

Observes animals for signs of illness, trauma, or social instability and reports abnormalities to the appropriate veterinary staff.

Monitors the administration of special diets and medication.

Supervises the maintenance of research animals, their cages, and facilities.

Ensures that the facility complies with federal animal and research regulations.

Collects medical specimens.

Trains and supervises staff. Performs related responsibilities as required.

Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and / or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

A high school diploma or equivalent.

Four years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience which must include one year of laboratory animal experience and one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.

The ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

PREFERRED / DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.

Previous animal care experience.

AALAS certification.

Collaborative and Team spirited.

Previous animal care supervisory experience.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT :

Work schedule : Monday - Friday 7 : 30 am - 4 : 00 pm, alternating weekends and holidays; a slightly adjusted work schedule may be considered.

Outdoor work environment and hazards (weather, and insects for example).

Considerable amount of time walking and standing.

Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues.

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require. following basic safety precautions.

Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory animal facility environment.

Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and / or squat.
