Summary Description

  • The Arts and Crafts Program and Art Department at Colorado College have a long history of Fiber education. The focus of the Fiber Fellowship is threefold;
  • it provides space, time, material resources, and facilities for artists to create new work; provides opportunities to share their artistic practice through artist talks, and an exhibition;

and provides the opportunity to teach classes within the Art Department as well as the co-curricular Arts and Crafts Program.

The Fellow will be hosted by the Arts and Crafts program which is a part of Student Life and serves the CC campus community (students, staff, and faculty) with co-curricular programs.

The Director of the Arts and Crafts program will support the fellow in connecting to campus resources, such as access to the Fine Arts Center, coordinating research opportunities with other faculty at the College, and working with the Fellow to connect them to broader resources within the college that would help to expand their research and artistic practice.

The Fellow will work in tandem with the Director of Arts and Crafts and the Chair of the Art Department on programming and curriculum.

As part of the fellowship, the fellow will work in tandem with the Director of Arts and Crafts to develop co-curricular workshops, classes, and programmatic opportunities.

The Fellow will also work directly with the Art Department to develop a for-credit Block-long (three- and one-half week) class that supports their current curriculum and utilizes the fibers studio located in Arts and Crafts.

Currently, the Arts and Crafts Studio includes 18 floor looms and a small dye lab. Programmatic and curricular material exploration could range from weaving, sewing, dyeing, printing, and other aspects of surface design.

The Fiber Fellow should be knowledgeable of a range of fiber techniques and practices that would utilize the studio, have knowledge of the history and contemporary discourse in the field, and have a desire to experiment.

About Colorado College Arts and Crafts Program : The Arts and Crafts program at Colorado College supports students from all areas of the college to explore, experiment, and engage with art and craft processes and histories.

The program is co-curricular and provides art making experiences outside of the traditional classroom environment. In Arts and Crafts, we embrace experimentation, failure, joy, friendships, and space to make connections to learning and everyday life.

It is an inclusive space that values difference of experience, ideas, and backgrounds and is committed to antiracism in our programs and everyday practices.

The Arts and Crafts program brings together makers at all different levels of their practice. We continue to support student-led classes and programs, while also offering art making experiences taught by staff, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists who are pushing the edges of contemporary craft.

The program acknowledges the role of craft in many different areas and focuses on the following intersections, Craft + Material Exploration and Experimentation, Craft + Community, Craft + Design, Craft + Activism, Craft + Environment and Craft + Wellness.

Fellowship Opportunities :

  • Time and space to develop new work in a private and shared studio
  • Private studio : 24-hour access to the 15’X15’ studio within the Arts and Crafts.
  • Equipped with two large working tables, and floor loom
  • Shared weaving studio : 24-hour access to the larger Arts and Craft Studio space.
  • Two table looms

  • Two Magic Dobby looms
  • Three spinning wheels
  • Small dye lab with ventilation
  • Sewing space with eight machines
  • Exhibition and artist talk
  • Solo exhibition at the end of the Fellowship
  • Artist talk open to College campus and community
  • Access to College research resources
  • Access to Tutt Library and other research resources within the college
  • Access to the Fine Arts Center
  • Opportunities to connect with faculty and staff across campus and collaborate with academic and non-academic departments as opportunities arise.

Housing Provided : On-campus housing in a 1-bedroom faculty / staff apartment is provided if the selected candidate opts to live off-campus, no housing subsidy is provided.

Housing is considered taxable income.

Travel : Up to $600 of travel will be reimbursed to the fellow for travel to Colorado College.

Teaching Opportunities and Responsibilities :

  • Teach co-curricular workshops and classes utilizing the range of fiber equipment and studio. These classes are co-curricular non-credit programs open to all Colorado College students, faculty, and staff (between 8-10 hours a week with flexible scheduling).
  • Teach a for-credit block class in Block 1 for fall fellow, Block 4 for spring fellow.
  • Engage with the Colorado College community : students, staff, and faculty.
  • Actively support the college’s commitment to be an antiracist institution by understanding, engaging with, and promoting diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and equity in the college community.
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations and accidents;

following college procedures and participating in appropriate safety training.

Demonstrate environmental sustainability by using college resources wisely and supporting the college’s sustainability initiatives and innovation.

Work location On-site : This position operates on campus Pay Band On-Call / Temp Anticipated Salary Range Pay Information The pay for this position is $14,000.00.

The pay range reflects base pay for positions in a given pay band across the college. Individual rates are determined within the range by factors including one’s qualifications, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same band and department budget.

Does this position require driving CC vehicles / being insurable under CC's insurance plan? No Required Qualifications :

  • Have extensive knowledge of the history of fibers and contemporary practices and are focused on experimentation and the development of new work.
  • The ability to make use of the equipment that we have in the Arts and Crafts studio for programming, classes, and their own work
  • Hold a Master of Fine Arts in Fibers or related work in the field and have experience teaching within higher education.
  • Have experience working with undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications : Higher education teaching experience. Experience in a liberal arts environment.
