The Juvenile Rights Practice is seeking an Assistant Attorney in Charge (AAIC) with a strong knowledge and litigation experience in Juvenile Delinquency and Adolescent (Criminal Youth Part) practice for the high volume youth justice practice in the Bronx Trial office.

The Assistant Attorney-in-Charge must have a demonstrated commitment to representing children and youth within juvenile, criminal, and child welfare systems.

The ideal candidate must have complex litigation experience, keen trial skills and a fundamental appreciation for an interdisciplinary model and holistic representation.

The AAIC must have demonstrated leadership, supervision, interest in performance management and staff development. The AAIC is responsible for providing legal and managerial leadership within the office, working closely with the Borough's Attorney-in-Charge to ensure high standards of representation and client service.

The AAIC is involved in all aspects of day-to-day operations, including training, supervising, and mentoring staff, and plays a significant role in Practice-wide management and decision-making.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal and Managerial Leadership

  • Provide legal and managerial leadership for the Juvenile Rights Practice in the Bronx Trial Office
  • Develop and implement legal strategies in collaboration with the Borough's Attorney-in-Charge

Team Development and Supervision

  • Provide direct supervision and training support to Juvenile and Adolescent Defender Practitioners
  • Evaluate staff performance and reinforce accountability
  • Analyze legal issues, develop legal strategy and supervise its implementation
  • Develop skills and knowledge of staff members
  • Evaluate conflicting demands and prioritize workload. Attend management meetings, commit to ongoing training and development, and utilize current employment policies and practices
  • Conduct management and supervision practices that support equity and inclusion

Operations Management

  • Monitor and maintain high standards of representation and client service
  • Evaluate office needs and allocate resources to address them Foster and encourage teamwork and communication

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the Juvenile Rights Practice and Legal Aid Society in the community
  • Maintain relationships with stakeholders in the legal, court, and service communities

Professional Development and other duties as assigned

  • Participate in continuous professional development
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Bronx - Juvenile Rights Practice Office

Required qualifications :

Juris Doctor (JD) degree and minimum of five years of legal practice in juvenile delinquency, and / or criminal law, knowledge of child welfare and family law;

with substantial trial litigation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred qualifications :

  • Additional years of legal practice in juvenile delinquency, and / or criminal law, knowledge of child welfare and family law
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred, but not required
  • Pro bono, government, public service, or academic experience relevant to the role
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, written, and organizational skills are required
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Strong commitment to exploring alternative structures for legal practice and to addressing fundamental issues of juvenile justice

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range / Salary : $118,159 to $156,734

HIGHER EDUCATION AND LOAN FORGIVENESS

The Legal Aid Society is a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This position allows an employee to take advantage of PSLF and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs.
