The Lab is dedicated to addressing declining bird populations, including bird-window strikes that are estimated to kill up to a billion across the United States each year.

We work collaboratively with a diverse network of partners to implement effective strategies that mitigate bird collisions with windows and promote awareness about the importance of bird conservation.

We seek to combine the Lab’s unprecedented data resources on bird populations with a growing expertise in social science to effect change.

About the Opportunity

We are hiring a BirdSafe project coordinator to collaborate on the development, testing, and implementation of public engagement campaigns to reduce bird mortality caused by collisions with glass.

The BirdSafe coordinator will be part of the Lab’s Center for Engagement in Science and Nature and will work with an interdisciplinary team at the Lab and with external partners to develop initiatives that engage individuals and communities in taking action to reduce window collisions by making glass safer for birds and turning out nonessential lights during spring and fall migration.

The coordinator will work with nonprofit, government, and business partners to understand partner needs and facilitate the consolidation, packaging, and delivery of messaging, best practices, and tools to help support and coordinate partner efforts.

Leading email marketing campaigns, working with stakeholders and the Lead Marketing Manager to design campaign-level strategy, objectives, and tactics that meet specific goals of the campaign.

Basic functions and responsibilities include the following :

Project Management : Work with internal and external stakeholders to identify highest priority needs. Collaborate to set goals, align stakeholders on priorities, define scope, assign tasks, and manage production and delivery of campaign materials, coordinating individual and group activities to meet project deadlines.

Track, summarize, and report on results to facilitate improvements in future iterations.

Outreach and Engagement : Collaborate with the Lab’s Bird Friendly core team and external partners to use social science research insights in the design and testing of messaging and calls to action for public audiences.

Participate in the design and coordination of outreach campaigns that inspire and support people to make glass safer for birds and turn out nonessential lights during spring and fall migration.

Partnership Development and Coordination : Develop and maintain relationships with other programs and coordinators to expand collective efforts across states and cities.

Facilitate information-sharing among partners and the consolidation and dissemination of best practices, resources, and training for working with key audiences such as city and state governments, building managers, local conservation and outreach organizations, media, businesses, and homeowners.

Work with partners to coordinate campaign activities. Surface successes and challenges to continually improve processes and outcomes.

This position is a 2-year term position. This position may be extended with additional funding, work and successful performance.

This position will be based in the Ithaca, New York, area; New York City; or Washington, DC, to enhance collaborations at the Lab of Ornithology and with regional partners.

If remote, quarterly travel to the Lab will be required, as well as travel to partnership organizations in New York City and Washington, DC.

What We Need

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in biology, environmental science, communications, policy, education, social science, or other relevant fields and 2 to 4 years of experience in stakeholder engagement, network building, or project coordination or equivalent combination.

Experience in and / or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Must have a record of successfully meeting schedules and milestones of projects involving multiple and diverse stages, participants, and stakeholders.

Demonstrated record of success in project leadership and management.

Experience with formal and informal science education, and / or public outreach.

Experience with social media platforms such as Twitter / X, Instagram.

Mastery of standard office management (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc) and communication software (e.g. Slack) required.

Experience managing digital communications.

Knowledge of birds or a willingness to learn quickly.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Strong communication skills with the ability to tailor messages to various audiences.

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and driver’s license and be able to travel.

Must be strongly motivated, able to think critically, and make a positive contribution to the Cornell Lab’s mission.

Ability to manage competing demands and work effectively and collaboratively with diverse partners sharing different perspectives.

Preferably, the successful candidate will also have the following :

Master’s degree or background in biology, environmental science, communications, policy, education, social science, or other relevant fields.

Advanced knowledge and multiple years of experience managing complex or multi-stakeholder projects.

Knowledge of birds’ life history, including behavior and migration.

Experience with writing grant proposals and reports, and previous experience with the preparation of scientific manuscripts.

Experience mentoring and advising volunteers and undergraduate students.

Familiarity with policy development and advocacy related to environmental issues.
