Position Summary

English Language Institute (ELI) instructors are responsible for teaching students in both the ELI University Preparation (UP) program and / or the ELI Academic Prep / Bridge program.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

The offer is contingent upon the availability of the courses.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6050.02 - $7375.17 . Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments.

Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement.

Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment / project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents;

choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc.

Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

The English Language Institute (ELI), a department of the Arts and Humanities Division at Bellevue College, is comprised of two intensive academic English programs.

The University Preparation Program (UP) is an intensive, academic English program designed to prepare students for university study.

Classes are offered across five levels and cover four different areas of English : grammar, reading, writing, and speaking / listening.

The Academic Prep Bridge program is a one-quarter program where students learn and practice critical thinking, study skills, research techniques, and listening, speaking, reading, and writing in academic content areas.

Essential Functions

  • Utilize a variety of innovative teaching and learning strategies to assist students in achieving learning outcomes and outcome assessments.
  • Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment within the classroom setting.
  • Participate and lead in the use of multiple modalities in the classroom.
  • Possess strong commitment to student success.
  • Support, advise and mentor students.
  • Participate in the life and culture of the department, division, and college as well as professional development activities.
  • Maintain effective communication with a diverse faculty, staff, and student populations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or related field. OR Bachelor's Degree, prior ESL teaching experience, and currently enrolled in a Master's in TESOL program.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect and build relationships with diverse students and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in a multi-cultural, multi-ability classroom and advocate for diverse learners.
  • Effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in an intensive academic ESL program (e.g. IELP, IEP, AEP).
  • Experience working with students with widely ranging skills levels, nationalities, and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of intensive ESL course content using diverse methods and materials.
  • Current knowledge of second language acquisition and ESL methodologies.
  • Experience teaching emerging international student populations within the current demographic shifts.
  • Knowledge of a foreign language.
  • Commitment to personal and professional development.
  • Use of technology and EdTech in teaching.
