Position Summary

The Chemistry Department seeks a dedicated and motivated individual to teach chemistry courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence.

The selected candidate will perform duties and functions with the support of the program chair of Physical Sciences and will directly report to the Science Division Dean.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6050.02 - $7375.17 . Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments.

Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement.

Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment / project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment.

All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc.

Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department

The Chemistry Department is included in the Physical Sciences Program within the Science Division. Chemistry instruction is supported by a comprehensive collection of laboratory and demonstration apparatus and laboratory support staff.

The members of the Chemistry Department are an active and eclectic group with a variety of research backgrounds, who share a common commitment to excellence in teaching.

Members of the department participate in professional activities at both the regional and national levels. Except for a very few courses (currently only CHEM 100) all of the department offerings are integrated lab-lecture courses with students earning both laboratory and lecture credit in the same course.

Essential Functions

  • Teach a 6-credit combined lecture / lab class or a 5 credit Lecture class. Class sizes are typically 24 students.
  • Teach chemistry courses spanning the chemistry department offerings as assigned.
  • Teach in face-to-face settings and / or synchronous and / or asynchronous virtual settings.
  • Prepare course materials, including varied assessments of student knowledge.
  • Design and facilitate learning experiences centered around student needs and interests by using varied instruction methods and resources.
  • Hold weekly office hours in accordance with the current faculty contract and generally assist students in person one-on-one and / or both through electronic media and in-person.
  • Use data, self-reflection, and student / colleague feedback to revise your instruction, improve student success and better serve historically underserved, underrepresented, or marginalized.

  • Grade and / or provide useful feedback to students in a way that promotes student understanding and improvement. Assign overall course grades.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student success through fostering a positive and caring learning environment where diversity is valued.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in chemistry or in a closely related field or a Baccalaureate degree in chemistry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (to students and colleagues).
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students and staff of varied ethnicity, age, background and ability, and a commitment to achieving educational success in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Experience with and dedication to incorporating educational equity into teaching practices to address the needs of students of varied ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documented successful college teaching experience in chemistry.
  • Experience with community college teaching and a sincere interest in student success in an open enrollment institution.
  • Knowledge of current chemical education research and applications of research findings.
  • Concentrated interest or experience in hands-on experimental aspects of chemistry.
  • Experience and continuing interest in ways to make explicit the connections between chemical theory and the physical world as experienced by students.
  • Experience with teaching chemistry for the biological sciences and current curriculum development for these courses.
  • Experience in the preparation of K-12 teachers of chemistry or physical sciences.
